I don’t know how well Sorenson Squeeze utilizes all the cores, but you could try the Compressor 3 “trick” of basically launching multiple instances of the app in pseudo-render farm style to get all the cores cranking on the encoding job.

Here Here! The COW is a fantastic resource and considering all the info I glean from it I’m just about thrilled when I have an opportunity to give something back. 🙂

[Mark Suszko] “A marketing guy would charge the same price, make the bar the same length but narrower, and call the new smaller bar “lower-calorie diet size”. People will rationalize that since it’s a diet version, they can get away with eating two instead of one, same as they do now with Halloween “fun size”. Marketing guy retires to a tropical island.”

I don’t know if it’s still on the market but Milky Way used to have a “lite” bar that did exactly that. It was made exactly the same as the regular Milky Way bar except a bit smaller.

    Warren,

That is very interesting because I just did this last week. I dropped the TCR filter on a DVCPro HD nested sequence, repositioned it top center and took it down in size from the default 22 to 20. What type of timeline were you working in?

I’m not at work right now but I’m pretty sure the machine is running 10.4.11 and FCP 6.0.2.

  • Questions for an assistant editor (doesn’t need to specifically be an assistant editor. Could also be editor or someone who works close to the editor or helps with the equipment or video decks or something
    similar).

What kind of product do you make? (features, commercials, weddings, etc.)
I’ve worked on reality TV shows, a documentary, and marketing and behind-the-scene featurettes for feature films.

What kind of personality do they look to hire?
Dependable, teachable (no know-it-alls), driven, likable, independent yet good in groups, and you must excel in a stressful environment. Attitude is huge, btw. A good attitude will go along way and a bad attitude will severely hamstring you.

The name and position of the individual to send your resume too.
The title may change depending on if you are trying to work at a post house or trying to get a gig on a TV show or movie. But looking for the the Post Supervisor is probably a safe bet (or asking who’s in charge of editing or post production). And if you know
anyone who already works there have that person recommend you to the Post Sup otherwise your cold call will end up in the trash most likely.

How did you get your job at the company?
I’ve landed a couple of jobs off the internet, but most of my of jobs I land via networking. Notice a trend here? 😉

Any other tips or information you could give me
I’m in LA, but this advice probably applies for any major market. Be patient, be diligent, be prepared to be poor indefinitely, be prepared when opportunity knocks. This career is a marathon, not a sprint so never give up on your goals.

The only thing it’s missing, IMO, is a quasi-medical looking graphic/animation to come up and “illistrate” how the pillow works w/when the VO says, “It supports your chin and jaw….” To me the less than stellar acting in this case isn’t a huge detractor for a couple of reasons. First, most actors in these types of commercials aren’t very good anyway, and if these are supposed to be testimonials from real people I don’t expect real people to come off as good actors on camera.

This thing might not be the best commercial ever made but I think it could definitely go on air and move some pillows.

January 5, 2008 at 7:31 am in reply to: **LA ONLY** Freelance Editor’s Day Rate Help!

Of course there are a lot of variables, but I’d say $2k/wk would be on the low end if you were doing a TV show. I know some editors who cut “behind-the-scenes” pieces for big films and were getting upwards of $50/hr (typically working 50/hr weeks). There’s a lot of money in promo/trailer work as well. I don’t know much about the other markets out here (corporate, wedding, etc.,).

[grinner hester] “I know of no place that wants to hire good assistant editors. Every one of them are looking for potentially fine editors at an entry level rate.”

Like I said, it depends on the job. I’ve worked at post houses that looked more “big picture” and I’ve worked on TV shows that don’t care where you want to be a year from now ’cause all they are looking for is an AE for the next 8 weeks. I’ve worked w/people that have been AEing on feature films for years and people that have gone from runner, to AE, to editor at trailer houses inside of 12 months. The rules change depending on where you play.

    David,

I’m not sitting in front of FCP right now, but I do think you can center punch an export. When you export via QT Conversion under the “size” setting there is a “preserve aspect ratio” drop down menu and I think the options are “letterbox” and “crop” (w/crop being the center punch).
