Yes, FCP displays HDV (and DVCPro HD) using the appropriate pixel aspect ratio so that at the images display in 16×9 (instead of 4×3 and distorted), but the codecs themselves are not square pixels.

[Jerry Alto] “Johanna- It looks correct because HDV1080i ARE square pixels! “
HDV 1080 uses UNsquare pixels (1440×1080 as opposed to 1920×1080). HDV 720 uses square pixels though.

Jeremy,
Yes, if you use match frame to load the source clip into the Viewer and export using “QT Movie” (not “QT conversion”) the clips metadata (TC, reel #, etc.,) will remain intact. But I would agree though to lock the edit first then apply SmoothCam so one doesn’t waste time applying effects to something that won’t make the final cut.-A

April 13, 2008 at 1:16 am in reply to: Getting organized In Final Cut Pro by Shane RossI have Shane’s DVD and definitely recommend it. David pretty much hit the nail on the head, but I’ll toss in my 2 cents as well. Coming from a vault and AE back ground project organization and management is always on the front of my mind and even though some of the tips in Shane’s DVD were things I was already aware the tips I *wasn’t* aware of were well worth the price of admission.
Also, Shane contributes a TON to the editing community free of charge w/his blog and all the forums he posts on so I’d almost recommend buying the DVD on general principle just to give a little back to Shane for the mountain of knowledge he’s shared w/the community over the years.

What your son does in college is more important than where he does it, IMO. I know people who went to big name film schools (some even w/masters) and people who went no-name schools and it made no difference here in the LA food chain. We all worked in lower level positions and worked our way up based on performance (and luck and networking) and not on where our diploma came from. When I was in college I tried to do as much extracurricular work as possible and that work ethic led to getting a camera assistant position (cable puller) once when Monday Night Football came to town. When I was starting out that single MNF game got me more call backs then my diploma did, IMO.
I’d say go to a good in state school w/a film/broadcast program (if possible), get a well rounded education, and business minor. As unsexy as it sounds to a budding “artiste” you need at least a basic understanding of the business side of things (if for no other reason then to make sure you aren’t getting screwed by a shady contract). The money saved by staying in state can be put towards your sons living/moving expenses after graduation or so he can intern/work away from home during the summers. Also, tell your son to start hanging out on the COW and other industry forums. Not only is there a lot to learn, but he can start building his network so when he goes to LA or Phoenix or Atlanta he already has people he can call up for advice over lunch/dinner/drinks.

[Trevor Ward] “I have a question for FCP editors. I’m considering making a new camera purchase. From an editing standpoint, which recording medium is better? XDCAM or P2? (I realize there are many codecs that this is enveloping. So I guess we’re talking about DVCPRO HD vs. HDV (is that XDCAM 35Mbps?)
XDCAM is not HDV. Keeping it short:
HDV2 (the format Sony uses) = 1440×1080, 4:2:0 @ 25Mbps
XDCAM HD = 1440×1080, 4:2:0 @ 35Mpbs
XDCAM HD (new spec coming at NAB) = 1920×1080, 4:2:2 @ 50Mbps
XDCAM EX = 1920×1080, 4:2:0 @ 35MpbsWhich is better on storage space or system resources?
DVCPro HD is a 100Mbit codec and XDCAM HD is 35Mbit. So if you are shooting 1080i60 you’ll get about 50gig/hr and 15gig/hr respectively. XDCAM will be more proc intensive though due to the long GOP compression (so expect less RT and longer conversion times).
– Which is better for archiving?
I’d say XDCAM HD is because you shoot/record to disc so you have a physical master to put on the shelf. If you use XDCAM EX or P2 then you’ll have to either roll the footage out as video or use a file-based archiving method. But it ultimately depends on your workflow as to what is best.-A

Is the FCP sequence properly prepped for Color (no gfx, no freeze frames, no stills, no speed changes… pretty much nothing but “virgin” video on V1)?
I’d highly recommend checking out Walter Biscardi’s Color tutorials.

If you have access to FCP there is a niftly plug-in called Electronic Make-up Artist you could give a whirl.

Just going by my LA experiences 350 a day is a nice bit of change for an AE. PAs typically make a bit over $100/day and interns work for free or nearly free. If you’ll be the lead AE and/or bring a lot of experience w/you then obviously you can command more money.
Scott, one word, roommate. 😉 My first year or so in LA I made $25k before taxes and still had money at the end of each month to put away in a savings account. Find a roomie, be smart w/yer money and you’ll be good-to-go.

I’d find an entertainment lawyer in your area and have them draw up a contract for the bands to sign.
