A key difference being that FCP ‘classic’ always seemed to be moving onwards and upwards where as FCP X currently looks like a regression. But I guess that depends on what audience the app is mainly targeted for.

Thanks for the advice, Bill. And the incidental reminder that I need to update my sig as I’m on FCP 7 now.

I got the Avid crossgrade discount and am just waiting on the UPS guy to get it to me. That’s also another variable in the mix. My original Mac Pro (which is my home office machine while the one in my sig is the Mac at my day job) looks like it barely meets the specs to run Avid MC 5.5 and I know it will be a bit before Lion gets stable and Avid supports it. I figure as long as my current MP can run Avid I’ll wait as long as I can before I upgrade.

Kinda like you said, if a good gig comes up and I don’t think my machine can handle it I’ll buy a new Mac then but if not I’ll hold out as long as I can. Only gonna get faster and cheaper, right?

From what I’ve heard Apple is holding back any new hardware releases until Lion ships because they want Lion on the new hardware. Since Lion is dropping soon the guess is that new towers and minis, w/Thunderbolt, will drop a few weeks later.

Really? Is $300 for FCP X really all that different than $1000 for FCP, Motion, Compressor, Color, DVD SP, Soundtrack Pro and Cinema Tools? While price usually hints at quality Apple completely tosses that out the window. I mean, Color used to be a $25,000 program that Apple included at no extra charge.

I would find all the copies you can and stock up. From what I’ve read retailers started shipping back boxed copies to Apple last week.

The AJA paper didn’t really instill any relief on my end. Video monitoring to a broadcast monitor is preview quality only (basically extended desktop) and in order to lay off to tape I have to export a QT movie. Joy of Joys. Apple ups the quality of FCPs color correction tools then apparently removes the ability to be properly monitor the video image. Um, thanks?

I really, really hope this is just a band-aid type fix and a more proper solution is coming down the pipe.

Retailers have also been returning their FCS boxed copies to Apple, from what I heard. Looks like there could be a cottage industry of selling FCS on eBay.

I was thinking the same things Shaun. Instead of sending a baseband video feed to a broadcast monitor I fee like we are just ‘extending the program’ to the broadcast monitor. I don’t want to see what the video looks like inside FCP X’s gui I want to see what the actual video signal looks like. I hope that’s still possible to do somehow.
