Assuming they work as advertised Media Stems Export and XML support fill some big holes as does Xsan support and custom timecode.
I wonder how different the FCP 10 launch would have gone if these features were present and things like Share to YouTube and iMovie project importing were added in a later update?

Apple is a hardware company. They want to sell Macs, iPhones, iPads, etc.,. The software and services they offer are all geared up to sell Apple hardware. That’s why the only software that is cross platform is software that enables iDevices to interface with PCs.
Hardware is key to Apple’s ecosystem so I don’t see them turning into a software company anytime soon.

I feel like there are multiple examples of a division w/in Apple over what FCP 10 is supposed to be. Whether it’s the last minute hijacking of the Super Meet at NAB or the apparent cramming of an F1 engine into a go-kart that is FCP 10 (to steal a phrase from a fellow COW user) it just seems like there are two competing agendas at Apple right now and the product so far has been the very un-Apple-like fiasco over the past few months.
It’s come to light over the past few years that Apple likes to keep the teams lean and mean which means taking people off their current projects (such as FCP 10) and moving them onto higher priority projects (such as iOS) instead of hiring on more staff. Leopard was officially delayed to make sure the iPhone shipped on time and maybe Apple went to that well once too often w/FCP? Maybe someone thought FCP could coast a little longer w/o a big update and when that assumption dissolved Apple realized they’d been caught w/their pants down.

Maybe part of the reason you see so many 35+ yr old people w/steady work is because it takes that long to build enough of a rep to get to that point? Even then, I know guys who have been cutting in LA for decades and have hit rough patches in the last few years. It’s tough for a lot of people and the least established usually get hit the hardest because they have the fewest resources to fall back upon.
To build a bit on what Shane was saying, cold call (or cold e-mail) people you’ve met on industry forums. Say you’re looking for advice, not a job, and that you’d like to take them out for lunch/dinner/drinks/whatever. I’ve landed work indirectly that way even though my angle was never to hit someone up for a job. I meet them, pick their brain, and hopefully leave them w/a good enough impression that if they hear of something they’ll contact me. Either way it’s a win/win for me.
Just for perspective, when I was 25 I was a vault manager at a post house. I started training as an AE there and then left to AE on a tiny reality show for a cable channel no one even knows about. Getting that first AE gig was a bit of dumb luck (a friend met a post supervisor at party, brought me up in conversation and got me contact info). That led to another AE gig w/the same, awesome post sup. Unfortunately that show got cancelled abruptly and I ended up editing full time for a then small website. A mid-range goal of mine was to support myself by editing before I was thirty and I’d done it w/a few years to spare (although nothing happened quite the way I expected it to).
And all of that was *after* I’d already crashed and burned in LA on my first go around and had to leave the city for a couple of years w/o a penny to my name and totally disheartened.
Bottom line though, go after what you desire ’cause you only live once. If your heart isn’t deeply in editing or post then staying in this side of the industry will only delay the inevitable.

I would advise against using the capture HDV-to-ProRes feature in FCP. I’ve used that feature in the past and had odd problems w/those clips during exports or transcodes (such as round tripping with Color). When I’ve used software to transcode HDV clips into ProRes I’ve never had issue before.
Maybe mine is a unique case, but once bitten twice shy.

I just place two slugs on the top video tracks and use them to mask out the top and bottom of the image.

That is correct. I think this either started with Leopard or Snow Leopard. There might be ways to hack around it but I don’t know what that would entail and what the possible side effects might be.

If it ships with Lion there is firmware that will prevent any older OS from booting, AFAIK.
