I think it’s pretty crazy seeing those speeds with off-the-shelf gear on an iMac. Practical? Not really. But neither are show cars but that doesn’t mean they aren’t fun to gawk at. Geez, buncha wet blankets up in here. 😉

I agree that Apple is just being used as a case study and is not the only company that does this, but I disagree that Apple’s hand has been unequivocally forced. Divide Apple’s profits (not revenue but profits) by their workforce (workers of contractors aren’t counted) and you’ll get $400,000.00 of profit per Apple employee. There’s a lot of room there to absorb the higher wages of manufacturing in the US if they wanted to but it doesn’t make good business sense for them to do so.
What I don’t understand are the race-to-the-bottom apologists. The people that think we should force everyone down to a Chinese worker’s standard of living instead of trying to bring a Chinese worker’s standard of living up. The people that say, “If you think a factory job is bad you should see the rural work” as if factory owners are doing their employees a favor by moving them from ‘really bad’ to ‘not quite as bad’ when it’s well within their power to move them from really bad to good. It’s like wanting a pat on the back for donating tattered, thread-bare, moth-eaten blankets to charity while you have mountains of down comforters that you’ll never use.

Like David I agree w/Shane, but I’ll toss in my 2 cents as well.
Why not just make a ProRes 422 master QT and hang on to that until you get proper delivery specs?
I believe HDCAM is 8-bit, 3:1:1 and thin raster (1440×1080 that is displayed as 1920×1080 on playback). With that being said it’s still the defacto HD tape delivery format.

Apple is a popular case study because of they rise, fall and rise but I think singling out Apple narrows the discussion too much. Apple isn’t doing anything that other corporations aren’t doing so, to me, the thread shouldn’t be called “Apple turning evil” it should be called “corporations turning evil”.
Something I found interesting from the NY Times article is that if Apple, or another corporation, moved their manufacturing plants back to the US it would be logistic / supply management and man power problems that would cost the most money, not having to pay ‘American wages’ to workers. For example, the person from Corning said that they decided to open a new glass making plant in Asia instead of the US because, from a supply line stand point, it’s better to have it in Asia than to have it in the US and ship product to Asia.

My first suggestion is to break it up into multiple reels based on category. One reel for weddings, another for corporate, another for scripted, etc.,. My second suggestion is to show more of your actual edits. Too many reels, not just yours, are basically montages cut to music which is great if you are trying to get jobs cutting montages to music but not so great if you are trying to get a corporate or scripted gig.
I also found the text at the beginning too difficult to read and if you can upload a higher quality version I would do that as well.

A single FW800 should be able to handle four streams of HDV though. Four streams of ProRes HQ no, but four streams of HDV is only 12.4MB/s.

If you have to render the footage when it’s in the timeline than your project is not setup properly. Make sure your timeline matches your footage and you’ll be good to go.

You could be right. I haven’t paid super close attention to it. I know that there is ThB controller chip that has to be on the MoBo itself which is why, AFAIK, ThB can’t be added via a PCIe card to an existing machine. From what I’ve read I thought the lack of ThB in towers was just because Apple didn’t want to release new MP’s until they could put the new intel chips in them (which have been delayed). There could certainly be a tech reason behind it as well. I guess in the end it doesn’t matter as Apple is holding off on new MPs until the new intel CPUs are out.
The one year of exclusivity has ended and some PC makers are saying they’ll have ThB machines out by spring. Since it’s an intel pioneered tech I think it will have a much broader adoption rate than FW.

ThunderBolt is a single port that can do everything from drive a display to plug into fast, external storage to connect to b’cast quality I/O devices. Apple killed legacy ports with the USB-centric iMacs years ago and also jumped between FW and USB connectors on the iPod before finally deciding on the ‘catch all’ 30-pin port that is now on all their iDevices.
Given the desire for clean lines and simplicity I’m sure there are mock-ups of devices at Apple that don’t have anything but USB 2 and ThB ports.
