Like Shane and Rafael said, yes you’ll be able to edit it in FCP, but no it won’t be a pleasant experience as DNxHD is not a ‘blessed’ codec therefore anytime you do something like add a dissolve, apply the 3-way CC filter or adjust the opacity of a clip you’ll get a red render bar.

Even if it isn’t directly unsupported I doubt Apple is going to release a patch/update to fix conflicts or problems with Final Cut Studio 3 and Mtn Lion (or future versions of QT, iTunes, etc.,) not to mention third parties releasing updated drivers/support for FCP7 under Mtn Lion.

[David Eaks] “I don’t understand why so many people think the touch interface is so bad. Who ever said that if a touchscreen is used, that you get “locked in” and can ONLY use that? Am I missing something?”
In the demo the touch screen was used exclusively which leads people to believe that the point of the demo is to show how touch screen can be used exclusively with an editing application. I don’t think you can blame people for commenting on exactly what was shown in the video. In a comment on the video Jason (the person giving the demo) mentions that he doesn’t use the touchscreen all the time. A demo of him using the touch screen in conjunction with a keyboard and mouse/trackball/tablet/touchpad would be much more worthwhile, IMO. An obvious downside to using a mixed environment is that in order to use the touch screen you have to move your hand(s) away from the kb/m and to the monitor which begs the question, in what instances is it quicker to touch and grab a clip or touch the play button versus hitting the space bar, clicking the play button or clicking and dragging a clip?

Questionable…errr… option ergonomics aside, going with a totally touch interface like that can be very slow compared to using keyboard short cuts in conjunction with a mouse/touchpad/trackball/wacom tablet/tangent panels/etc.,. For basic things (like rough clip assembly) it could work fine but the deeper you drill down you’ll have to memorize abstract gestures for commands which tosses the ‘intuitive’ touch interface out the window.
Performing a three finger half circle counter clockwise, or whatever, to match frame a clip back to its bin isn’t anymore intuitive than hitting shift-f but hitting shift-f is a lot faster.
With all this being said, how many people have used Avid’s iPad app? I haven’t but I’m curious about it.

When I saw this earlier today I was hopping it was a part of Avid’s “Edit Anywhere on Any Thing” cloud-based initiate that they demoed at NAB a couple of years ago. If I had Avid Studio it might be a good companion app but I don’t so…

January 31, 2012 at 9:15 pm in reply to: FCP7 to FCPX XML Translation from Philip HodgettsSo all apps are now pay once and get free upgrades forever? When the next version of FCP X (10.1) or OS X (10.8) comes out they will be free if you already own FCP 10.0 or OS 10.7 respectively?

January 31, 2012 at 8:52 pm in reply to: FCP7 to FCPX XML Translation from Philip HodgettsI was never under the impression that once you buy FCP 10 you will get updates free forever. Apple also said you couldn’t do free trails via the app store either.

That this is only a 0.3 release seems to speak that Apple has a lot in mind that it considers much bigger than this. FCPX is coming along fine and they do seem to be moving quickly to re introduce what has been missing but the marketing is a botch. It’s driven people away. It’s create mistrust. Apple is certainly getting the App in order. They have to get the marketing in order as well.”Apple knows the update is big, regardless of what number they give it, and they also know they’d get raked over the coals all over again if they charged for any of these ‘catch up’ updates.
10.1 will be the next full version of the app just like 10.7 was the next full version of OS X.

[Tom Wolsky] ” Interesting that the Prelude import interface, skimming, and selection marking looks very much like iMovie.”
Considering that iMovie we know today started out as First Cut, an ingesting / logging app, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some similarities.-Andrew
