[Bob Zelin] “THIS very fact is my #1 concern about the pending “new Mac Pro”. Will Apple let us mere mortals open up the new Mac Pro and stick anything we want into it – without having to go to an “Apple Genius Bar” to do it – and without having to get only “Apple flashed hardware” where nothing else will work ? “

My guess is no they won’t. The Mac Pro will come with beefy GPU options but will be on a multi-year upgrade cycle. If you want to upgrade your GPU mid cycle your only option will be an eGPU.

On one hand the Mac Pro won’t have a user upgradable GPU, on the other hand the eGPU allows you to boost performance on any computer you use that has ThB 3.

[greg janza] “The Facebook groups also have a nice distinction that there’s very little debate and instead most conversation is solution or advice oriented with very little trolling.”

Out of curiosity which FB groups are you a part of? AFAIK I know I’m part of the largest groups for Avid, X, PPro and Resolve and as long as you keep the Avid talk in Avid or the X talk in X then all is good. Once someone brings up NLE A in NLE B’s group then the knives come out.

In my experience, and this is the same whether it’s forums or FB groups, if the community his homogeneous then there is very little drama. Once you introduce diversity then the potential for drama escalates and it’s up to the forum members (and the mods) to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand.

The heterogenous nature of this forums is what I like, no love, about it. There is representation for ALL the NLEs so we can have discussions that encompass all the NLEs. I’ve yet to come across another forum that’s so inherently inclusive and diverse.

I think the past execution, not the premise, of this forum is its shortcoming.

Thanks David, I try to add more signal than noise, but I know I’ve said some things in the past that were more personal instead of staying more on topic.

I think the FB groups get more traffic because FB is FB. It’s a one stop shop for everything where as for sites like the COW it’s a more pointed journey to visit. Also, FB group numbers don’t always correlate to ‘active’ members. I belong to all the big Avid, PPro, and X FB groups but I rarely post in any of them.

[David Mathis] “Once the forum name is officially changed how can we get more participation? This is a sincere question. I love this forum and want to see it thrive.”

Talk to everyone with civility. The toxicity in this forum comes from the users, not the name. No personal attacks, no childish rants, no condescending passive/aggressive BS, etc., The mods have to enforce it though and bounce people that refuse to play by the rules.

  • Scott Simmons has a good post over at ProVideoColalition talking about who Rush is designed for (Content Creators) an who Rush is not designed for (Video Editors).

  • Shane,

I think Bill was referring to the iOS version of iMovie since X has always been able to import projects from he desktop version.

  • [Bill Davis] “So open iMovie files in FCP X brought forward 2 years or so?

    Welcome aboard, Adobe!”

Adobe Premiere Clip (2014) did this before iMovie and Avid Studio (or was it called Pinnacle Studio?) did this years before either of them.

    EDIT:
Adobe may have a first here, when Rush is released for Android in 2019 I think it will be the first NLE that will cross-compatible on Windows, Mac, iOs and Android. iMovie/X is obviously Mac only, and Avid/Pinnacle Studio was on iOS and Android but projects could only be shared to PCs, not Macs. Also, Rush projects will seamlessly/update transfer between all four platforms (assuming your media is stored in the Cloud) where as the other programs are designed for more of a one way, one time hand off.

  • [Bill Davis] “My 2-bit theory is that the missing piece is still affordable desktop production suite monitoring. “

Agreed, though there’s more to monitoring than just an ‘affordable’ the monitor. How does the signal get to the monitor, the monitor needs to be properly calibrated, the lighting in the room matters, the color of the room matters, etc.,. It’s the difference between doing it and doing it right. And I’m not passing judgement because there are many times I’m doing a basic grade on a piece on my laptop in an uncontrolled environment because that’s what the gig is.

It’s like doing a final audio mix. The financial barrier to entry isn’t the software, it’s the room you are mixing in.

  • [David Cherniack] “Why stop with Resolve?. Maybe they should release a version for Baselight, too. ☺

I guess they figure that those who are challenged by ability or time will buy it. Probably there will be a few of those and it’s a shame that they’ll miss all that wonderful, creative capability that exists in Resolve’s color toolset.”

I think most people that are in the market for an NLE would prefer a more approachable way to grade than having to learn a high end grading app.

  • [Craig Seeman] “I don’t know if there’s another NLE that has this kind of competition in color grading plugins.”

So… no one likes the builtin tools on X? ????

[Craig Seeman] ” (a color grading plugin for Resolve… Imagine that)”

I’ve only watched the demo video but I assume the plugin is a vastly more simplified approach than Resolve’s built-in tools (which is something that’s required IMO if Resolve wants to have broader appeal).

So has Magic Bullet Looks (which arguably pioneered this space) been completely passed by?
