You can also create a plane behind the camera and project the image on that (make it big) an then kick up the reflections on your text to taste. It might use up a lot of resources but it is very controllable.

April 2, 2009 at 3:14 am in reply to: When do you use FCP vs. AE?

They each have different capabilities, I tend to look at motion as AE-lite (I know they work differently) but they accomplish the same basic function. First I dislike key-framing in FCP (dislike is an understatement) and in motion the 3D shadows do not work properly. On the other hand (and this is big) you can go back and forth between motion and FCP without a lot of pain and suffering. Going from FCP to AE is not quite as simple (it involves “Automatic Duck” software at least with CS3) so that forces me to do what I can in motion and FCP but if I need finesse and depth I will move to AE. The bottom line is FCP is a simple compositor, capable but cumbersome, Motion is a good compositor with interesting capabilities and somewhat fun but the software is not mature yet. AE can do anything you want if you know how to work it but not worth the time for simple things that motion does by hitting a button. You don’t need a 5 lb sledge to drive finishing nails.
For my last thought, Limitations force creativity, software is just a tool, I have seen things done in FCP that were mind boggling to do in AE. Skill and vision has a lot more influence on the outcome than a tool set.

March 30, 2009 at 12:45 am in reply to: eSATA performance?

Some drives are shipped with the jumpers set to 1.5 (SATA 1) instead of 3.0 (SATA 2) this setting could cause the problem.

  • You can try changing the codec to Prorez and re-rendering or export as prorez and it will be smaller. Just out of curiosity, where is this going?

  • Nate,
The settings have me perplexed. The animation setting (Quicktime) is used for graphics mostly and compatibility between multiple edit systems. It is not a realtime codec. With the sequence set up this way everything has to be converted to the animation codec to output. Where did the source material come from?

February 23, 2009 at 7:41 am in reply to: microphone levels with MX02?

Just jumping in, the 302 has better metering, an extra channel, extra line inputs and outputs and in general a nicer more adaptable mixer. Does it sound better than the MixPre? No. Is it simpler to use? Yes. Will you wish you had bought the 302 a year from now? probably. As far as understanding the sound technical stuff, you obviously have learned enough about FCP to start up a system. The same will happen with the sound. If you are like me there will be some trial and error. So, plug the stuff in and make some noise.

February 15, 2009 at 6:26 pm in reply to: boot intermittent problem despite clean install

Instead of using software update download the 10.4.11 COMBO update and install it. Then repair your permissions. I will sometimes do a safe boot (start-up holding down the shift key) and then restart.
The combo updates seem to work better than the software update feature.
    Hope this clears it up.

From memory, 5.0.1 could capture hdv but because of its buggy behavior these capabilities were useless.

January 20, 2009 at 3:04 pm in reply to: Media is out of sync only in FCP

Do me a favor, highlight the file control-click and select item properties and under format see if the audio sample rate has miraculously changed to 48.001. (I have seen this quite often on PPC systems)
there is a lot of debate on the render file issue and what I know for sure is that when the timeline is playing back video that is not in the timeline, FCP is confused period. The latest version seems to loose track of render files quite easily. Two things can help, 1 delete render files and re-render, 2 use a utility like disk warrior on the media drive. which straightens out the directory, which solves confusion.
    Hope this helps,
