I’m using a video scaler as a TBC to capture Hi8 video tape footage with an AJA KIPro solid state video recorder. The Hi8 machine does have its own TBC but, for some reason, some tapes do not synch well (it’s about 50/50 at this point.) I mention it only because it has been an inexpensive solution for us. It was $60 delivered on ebay. It’s the cheapest “TBC” available.

    Steve,
I believe under “General Settings” you can check an option that allows Avid to use filenames longer than 27 characters. It doesn’t seem to effect filename lengths on export though? I haven’t tried longer bin or sequence names though so you might want to give that a go.
I posted this same question on the LinkdIn Avid group. Mark Chesak says you can leave that field checked and un-check “Use Windows Compatible Filenames” and that will allow you to export files with names longer than 27 characters (if I’m reading him right, always a possibility that I’m not ;o)
I will say, I have not been able to test this. Not going back to work until later this week.

    Daniel,
Thanks for the reply. I suspected that but was putting a call out on some forums just to make sure.

After a clean install of both the OS and FCP7 upgrade I’m still having the same problems. I was able to get the old intall of FCP6.0.5 on my 10.4.11 boot drive to work after downgrading to the 32bit drivers in AJA utilities. Perhaps we’ll upgrade later next year, after Snow Leopard gets worked out a bit more.

I’m capturing SDI from a DVCProHD deck. We’re going to boot from our 10.4.11 OS drive with the previous install of FCP605 and the old 32bit drivers for Kona3. It seems to work just fine. We’ll wait and see how things go with Snow Leopard/FCP7 and upgrade later.

    Thanks for the reply.

OK, here’s what happened. CalibratedMXF was installed on this machine and then un-installed. Seems the functionality stays or needs to expire? Nice little trick though. Sorry for the confusion.

“I am sitting in front of one right now.”

As am I. I’ve tried it again to confirm what I told you. It works. We ran P2CMS on a previous install but not on this OS. FCP701, “vanilla” as you put it. As I mentioned before, I’ve got more serious problems. Perhaps you’d like to address my other post from yesterday regarding audio sync issues off of tape.

December 22, 2009 at 10:08 pm in reply to: FCP7 Kona3 audio out of sync

I’m back. The problem has creeped back in again.

I’ve been on the phone with AJA as well as Apple Care. I’ve been able to capture footage, in-sync, with AJAs VTRXChange. My drivers and firmware are up to date. So, AJA says it’s a FCP issue.

Apple Care stepped me through creating a new user, log on as that user and still have problems. Trashed preferences and Cache files, boot in safe mode to get rid of them, re-boot and we still have the same problems?

Additionally I’ve tried capturing AES audio instead of embedded, no luck. Also, it doesn’t seem to matter wether it’s SD or HD?

On top of all that, my old boot drive (and old install of FCP) aren’t working. I can boot off the drive but FCP freezes up if I try to open Log&Tranfer?? WTF!?

Any thoughts. My next move is a clean install of the OS and FCP, tommorrow perhaps?

    Shane,

I beg to differ. I’m doing it, today I did it. Import->Files Navigate to the Content/Video folder and double click. The files play fine in FCP 7.0.1, the audio is synced. Unless my install of FCP is “special” then this is a feature. Like you, I thought this wasn’t possible, but there it is. At any rate, after I’ve OKd all the error messages it does import the entire file structure. The video files play etc…Don’t take my word for it. Try it out for yourself.

ps – I’m about to post on my real problems with FCP701 and Snow Leopard. This is nothing.

    Gary,

You’re a saint. That worked like a charm for the audio sync problem. I have a few other issues to work out though. My Easy Setups seem a bit wonky and my audio monitoring is still not straight?? You’ll be hearing from me again soon to be sure.

    Thanks again,
    Andre
