p2 drag and drop
Posted by Andre D’elena on December 21, 2009 at 7:48 pmWhen we get p2 files from the field they are always organized the same way (p2/day/card#/CONTENTS/etc…) We’d like to be able to drag the entire file structure (from day on down actually) into our FCP project. In FCP7 this is possible, but not quite. When I drag the ‘day’ folder into the project it gives me three separate error messages for each xml file in the CLIP folders. For a press conference or something where there’s only a few clips that’s fine. For a lot of shots, broll, etc it’s a deal breaker. The main error message says that FCP needs a translation document (odviously it’s trying to import the xmls and doesn’t know what to do with them.)
FCP7’s p2 mxf drag and drop capability is really nice but…we always want just a little bit more don’t we? Anyway, wanted to make sure I wasn’t overlooking something, some box I might be able to check that would make this possible??

December 21, 2009 at 7:57 pmYou are overlooking that FCP doesn’t support native MXF formats. You cannot drag and drop P2 files into FCP. You either need to use the LOG AND TRANSFER process as I lay out in this tutorial:
Or you need to invest in MXF4MAC or P2 Flow or Calibrated or Raylight. Even then, you can’t just drag and drop MXF files…the import process has to be done in a specific way for each. So you will be relegated to manually making the bin structure and then importing.
Only QT files in formats that FCP uses for editing support DRAG AND DROP.

December 22, 2009 at 3:24 pmIf you have HD log from Imagine Products you can open your cards and then save as an Alias. You can then import those alias QT’s into an FCP bin and edit from there.

I beg to differ. I’m doing it, today I did it. Import->Files Navigate to the Content/Video folder and double click. The files play fine in FCP 7.0.1, the audio is synced. Unless my install of FCP is “special” then this is a feature. Like you, I thought this wasn’t possible, but there it is. At any rate, after I’ve OKd all the error messages it does import the entire file structure. The video files play etc…Don’t take my word for it. Try it out for yourself.
Andre
ps – I’m about to post on my real problems with FCP701 and Snow Leopard. This is nothing.

Beg all you want, it doesn’t work. I went to a work machine that doesn’t have any P2 third party apps on it, as my laptop and home machine do. When I go FILE>IMPORT and navigate to a CONTENTS folder… I can select it, but CHOOSE is not an option. Double clicking does nothing. I go to the individual files, and they are all greyed out.
If I go FILE>IMPORT>FOLDER I can choose the CONTENTS folder, but then I get the error that 93 are unknown, and 15 are known, and the only thing that imports are the .BMP images in the ICON folder.
You cannot import P2 files natively in FCP without third party drivers.
Do you have P2CMS installed? That might allow you to import the MXF files, as it adds an MXF QT component, but the audio and video WILL NOT be tied.
[andre delena] ” The files play fine in FCP 7.0.1, the audio is synced. “
I highly doubt that. Not possible with a vanilla FCP 7.0.1 install. I am sitting in front of one right now.

As am I. I’ve tried it again to confirm what I told you. It works. We ran P2CMS on a previous install but not on this OS. FCP701, “vanilla” as you put it. As I mentioned before, I’ve got more serious problems. Perhaps you’d like to address my other post from yesterday regarding audio sync issues off of tape.

December 23, 2009 at 6:03 pmOK, here’s what happened. CalibratedMXF was installed on this machine and then un-installed. Seems the functionality stays or needs to expire? Nice little trick though. Sorry for the confusion.

February 19, 2011 at 3:11 amShane,
I quick shout-out to all the great info and help this forum has been to me over the years: THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!!
It’s time to give back!
You can edit MXF files natively from Panasonic’s HVX200 in FCP6 and FCP7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit modes without spending any money.
You need to download and install Panasonic’s P2 Contents Management Software aka P2 CMS. It is almost impossible to find. You can drag an drop .mxf files directly into your bin, the video file, and the four .mxf audio files, you WILL HAVE TO SYNCE THEM YOURSELF, but the clips are the same length, so it’s not super hard, just time consuming.
Here is the main page
https://pro-av.panasonic.net/en/sales_o/p2/cms/index.htmlHere is the download page. It’s under P2 Utility software: (Mac) P2 Contents Management Software

And I knew that. So, if it is so time consuming, why not just use LOG AND TRANSFER and have clips that are automatically synched?

February 20, 2011 at 3:54 amLog And Transfer wasn’t available to import files when we started a feature film project several years ago on FCP 5, and P2 CMS was used.
When we went back to the project to make some alterations and prepare Blu-ray material, the project was primarily native MXF, by this point we had upgraded computers and the P2 CMS had been lost during the various upgrades and installs. Log and Transfer is a good option and my preferred method for new projects, but we were now faced with using log and transfer to re-import nearly 3TB of footage and rebuilding the project and it’s simply not cost effect.
In your post from Dec 21, 2009 you stated that buying one of the various plug-ins was your only option beside using log and transfer. So, if you knew that wasn’t the case why didn’t you say it was?

Well, no, but IMPORT>PANASONIC P2 was. That option came available in FCP the week before DVCPRO HD P2 cameras hit the market. IN fact, IMPORT>PANASONIC P2 was a part of FCP 5 already, for the SD version of the cameras. The HD version of P2, DVCPRO HD, that first hit with the HVX-200 was compatible with FCP 5.0.4…that dot release came out the week before we got our cameras. And we did testing with the camera via help from Apple, when they used a Beta version to get us footage.
I used FCP 5.0.4 to import TONS of P2 footage into FCP for a feature doc I did for the History Channel on The Mexican American War. Article here:
https://magazine.creativecow.net/article/p2-tapeless-workflow-helps-rewrite-history
It was there. I even had a tutorial on the process here at the Cow.

That was written went Log and Transfer was out. If you were still using FCP 5 at that point, you wouldn’t see LOG AND TRANSFER. But you had IMPORT>PANASONIC P2. You were reading a new article and attributing it to your older version of FCP. Had you asked the question “How do I get P2 into FCP 5?”, I’m sure I or someone else would have provided the proper answer.
