Yes, they’re 48k aifs. And I’m monitoring through my Soundsticks. Its strange, it’s never been an issue before.
Is there such a thing as an “audio card” and the audio card has gone bad? Or is it possible the drive isn’t spinning evenly?Andrea Stewart

I would go with an eSata drive instead of FW800. I have 5 500GB drives in my MacPro = 2.5TB. 1 drive is the system. 1 drive I keep aside for the autosave and music/gfx/sfx, etc. and the remaining 3 drives are raided together for 1.5TB of storage.
While it all plays full uncompressed 10bit SD just fine. I have had “out of memory” errors. But the concensus seems to be that is because my projects were too big. This time I’m doing each Act in a separate project and will string together at the end. But that 1.5TB should cover you, Liz.

I got them both to work nicely together now.
IYI, I had to reinstall both applications along with Qmaster. I think the problem was when doing the software update after installing from disc. If I included the ProApps Security Update 2006-02 with the other software updates either Compressor or FCP wouldn’t work. Instead after reinstalling all three from disc, when I did the software update I updated FCP to 5.1.4, Motion to 2.1.2, Compressor to 2.3 and Qmaster to 2.3. Seems to be working alright. Will update if anything goes wrong.Andrea Stewart

Shane,
May I ask what version of the other ProApps are you running with FCP5.1.4? When I did the down convert to OS10.4.9 and QT 7.1.6, I can get either FCP or Compressor to work, but not both.

Chris and Jeff,
Thank you both for your input. Very interesting thread Chris and thanks for being scientific about it. I guess I’ll stick to jpg then. BTW, I’m not converting them to jpg. That’s they way they originate from the stock image library. Any move that requires more than doubling the size I guess I’ll take to After Effects to save on taxing FCP.
One last thought… Anyone output an EDL with jpgs? I’ve had issues with any media that doesn’t have timecode in the past when making an EDL. Just wondering if image codec makes a difference here.

I am having a wonderful day, and thanks for wishing one for me.
I was thinking more in terms of application stability/media management/rendering, etc. Any thoughts there?

I currently have 7.3.1
Should I just drag it to the trash and install 7.1.6?Andrea Stewart

I’m not sure why FCP is not playing your clips. I seem to recall that it doesn’t work with any of the avid codecs but that info could be old.
What you CAN do is open them in Quicktime Pro and export using any of the codecs that FCP will work with. Just choose whichever codec the rest of the clips in your sequence are and you won’t need to render them again when they’re placed in the sequence.

I have also had this problem, but finished the project with workarounds.
However, I’m attempting a post mortem now. Some culprits I’m suspecting include a) mixed codecs (I had DV, animation files, DVCPro and Uncompressed 10 bit in my sequence), b) plugins (recently added Magic Bullet Looks), c) too many audio tracks (15 in my case), or d) just bad mojo.
My project file on this one got very huge, nearly 800MB at one point, and only peeled back to 400MB when I deleted old timelines. I have heard that large project files don’t bode well for stability. But can’t find what is causing the project to become some large.
Please keep sharing what you find out.

Tom thanks for giving us that information. I am supposing by checking that “legacy” option in quicktime it allows quicktime to see the older version of the meridien codecs.
I keep a folder of the avid codecs just in case they need to be reinstalled. Avid updated its codecs 1/8/08 it seems. They’re now version 1.8.0 and the old were 9.4.2 It seems counterintuitive.
Glad to know there is a way to view/use both versions.
