Overview
This chapter specifies the iTunes Timed Text (iTT) file format for delivering timed text content to the iTunes Store. The iTT file format is a subset of the Timed Text Markup Language, Version 1.0 W3C Candidate Recommendation 23 February 2010 (TTML) (https://www.w3.org/TR/2010/CR-ttaf1-dfxp-20100223/) from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) (https://w3.org/). All iTT documents are TTML documents that use the restricted subset of TTML.
An iTT document specifies the font style, font color, text alignment, and layout of the timed text, as well as the text itself and the timing. The iTT format restricts what can be specified to make sure that the content is suitable for use as a subtitle track in iTunes Store content…So no font here either.

I don’t have the update installed, but per definition CEA-608 has no font option.

[9to5Mac]… Since captions are connected to audio and video clips in the timeline, they will move along with their connected clips as you organize your work. A new dedicated captions inspector will allow users to change text, color, location, and timing…
The real new thing is that captions can be attached to audio – otherwise subtitles always “walked” with the parent clip.
The other thing: captions inspector. I’m keen to see how they do. If I look at the screenshot I don’t see a warning for formatting (2 errors are obvious).
The real good news that captions can be embedded is only good news for US/CDN. Rest of the world is forgotten ????
But direct support for YouTube, Vimeo, etc is definitively very good.
Another question is: which languages are supported by their CEA-608(!) implementation.While 9to5Mac claims “no need for third parties” I somehow see just the opposite ???? – assuming they really change/approve role handling.

Unfortunately this (what you described) is the way FCPX works since release.
The described relative “new” feature makes the bad FX handling even worse.For a better understanding:
With FCPX release it was “user centric” and not designed to work collaborative or with several users.So the default location of FX was moved from “/Library/Application Support/…” (FCP) to “/Users/someUserName/Movies/…” (FCPX) – means from global access to single user access. For FX which use other sources than just “plain Motion code” additional storage locations may be involved.
Using the “Apple Way” to store FX in the Library is calling for trouble. It doesn’t include additional sources nor does it regard custom installations – you’re better not to use it. To clean up a spoiled setup definitively will cost more time than installing missing templates.
