Hi. I ‘ve been looking around to see if there is a way to create markers in an excel document (or XML if you can tell me how I would go about doing that) and then import to FCP as markers. Is this similar to what you are doing? Everything I’ve seen other places seems to describe the backwards version of what I’m trying to do. I’ve successfully imported an excel document’s info to FCP (via exceLogger) but haven’t figured out how to get that info to translate into actual clip markers in FCP. Naming a column “Marker Name” in my spreadsheet doesn’t seem to do the trick. Is there any way to do this?
Basically I’m looking to do this because I want to save time in my logging process. I am capturing entire tapes and while the tape is capturing I am watching it and logging in excel on my laptop. And I prefer markers when logging.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually did try that…as far as i know how to…by “exporting markers as text” (alternatively I tried opening an xml file of a clip with logged markers but can’t get it to open in a spreadsheet style…just looks like code)
and then using that same spreadsheet layout as that example created to do my logging, then bringing that excel file into ExceLogger app along with an xml of the (unmarked) file i was logging. But I get an error:
Errors Found Importing exceLogger.xml
clip:media:video:track:clipitem:file:timecode –: Unknown element encountered.( line 497 ) Looks like it failed on the timecode aspect but my timecodes are correct (dropframe ; and all..also tried it both ways with no success) so I don’t know what the problem is. Maybe its just not possible to do the workflow I imagine?

Yes the Kodak footage is 29.97 when imported from the SD card. And I am at the stage of testing small clips. The settings you mention for converting the video is what I have used. And when I bring all of the footage into the timeline (after changing clips’ field dominance to non), I have FCP match the clip settings and nothing needs to be rendered, but I still have the problem of interlaced look. So just to clarify – I should change the field dominance to “none” on my hvx footage as well as on my converted kodak clip? And then I would assume the timeline settings should also be “none”? This is what I have tried without any luck. Thanks.

Thanks for clearing that up. So then is it correct to change the field dominance of the clip to None after capture? or should I keep it as captured (lower)? Does my Kodak Zi8 footage record the frames in the same way? And do you have any insight on how I can convert my 720p30 footage to work in the same timeline as this HVX footage? Thanks for you time.

This is true. I am glad to hear that the IOHD can be reliable when properly setup. Since I have had multiple bad experiences I was thinking it was the device, but it makes sense now that it was an upgrade issue. Unfortunately I was not able to dictate the setups in which I have worked with the IOHD. I am not using it at the same time as any other firewire devices. I am looking forward to owning my own io and being able to set it up properly. Thanks for the feedback!

Good to know. If that is my only issue then I think I will be happy with the IOHD with everything properly installed. Another option I was considering was to use the IOHD for capturing but get a bare bones capture card to monitor the video if I wasn’t happy with the monitoring abilities of the IOHD…seems like a silly way to do it, but these kind of workarounds come to mind when you aren’t satisfied with a product. That is good to hear. I just updated the drivers last week and I believe the system I’m working on has a clean install, but since I didn’t setup the system myself its hard to know for sure.

Thanks Bob. If I go the dvi output route and with the panasonic plasma will the quality of the picture allow me to recognize any problems with my video before taking my video out of house for color correction?

Oh right. Thanks. I guess what I should have asked is…if I am working on a system capable of capturing different codecs for this, what codec is preferred and how much of a quality difference will there be from regular dv?
