August 5, 2012 at 12:01 am in reply to: Syncing a compound clip

I tired your method but still get the stacked result.

i have 25 video clips and 1 hour long audio clip

I first selected the audio clip and then command clicked all 25 clips, starting from the first one and then on through the last.

lastly i control click the audio track and hit sync.

what i get is a new clip called “synchonized clip: name of first video clip”

the result is that I get the first video clip and all the other video clips and the long audio clips all synced to it.

what we need is the audio track to be the master i imagine it should end up as “synchonized clip: name of audio track”

has anyone got any suggestions. This is down to the wire for me.

    Thanks

    hi zak,

That you for your informative response.

Now that i think about it. it is not important to have one continuous layer. I tried just making a protracted drawing without lifting the pen, after a minute there was a noticeable drag on the system. This is probably why it is not a supported feature.

What would seem to make sense, though, would be to be able to set a function so that each new layer being created automatically is placed after the last one in the timeline,
so that they are arranged in sequence one after another, without having to set an in and an out each time a new line is added.

I hope it is possible. it would be a great way to work in real time. so that one could open a video clip, and be drawing on the clip as it is playing. and they layers are being created in tandom with the video.

What i would really like to achieve is to make handwritten subtitles by simply watching the video play on the canvas and writting directly on the clip so that each new layer is being arranged in sequence in realtime. This would be such a great way to use the program and it seems like something that could be achieved simply. i hope it is!

    what do you guys think?

Thank you Shane so much for your detailed response.

Is is possible then to “transcode” i.e. convert all the clips in the browser to prores without losing the ins and outs?

Thank you again for your help..

    Thank you for the response.

but i think i was not very clear with my question.

What is happening is that I had project that i started editing all in h.264. THen i realized the mistake and changed the settings to prores so i had to transcode everything in the timeline. NOW. after all the footage in the timeline is transcoded to prores, when i move clips in certain ways I sometimes have to transcode again.

This DOES happens when i want to take a clip from the timeline and use the insert command to put it in another place in the timeline.

It DOES NOT happen when i just use the mouse and drag the clips around manually.

It DOES happen though when i drag a clip to temporarily store it, into a video bar above another clip in the timeline, and then move the temporarily placed clip somewhere else, in this case the clip which was in the video bar beneath the clip i was temporarily moving about then needs to be rendered again..

All in All, using a timeline that was transcoded seems to be a total drag on time, but i dont have another choice but to scrap all the edits i have made, and then send all the clips to Magic Bullet Grinder or another transcoding app, and then re set all my ins and outs and logs and THEN try to recreate the edit.

Is there another way? perhaps a way to transcode all the clips in the browser that are h.264 without losing the ins and outs and having to re edit?

THanks to all of you again for helping the community.

  • Thanks for the reply Shane!

coupled with each .mov file there is a .THM file which i assume is the file info. all i really did was change the folder name. everything in the folder is the same as it was originally..

The reason i wanted to use log & transfer is that it is very convenient to be reviewing the footage and setting the In’s and the Out’s on each clip.

Is there a good way you know to do this besides log & transfer? and also. given that i still have all the THM files is there a way to teach FCP to recognize them.

thanks so so much for responding, !

  • Hi,
I just returned from 6 months of filming abroad with stacks of Hard Drives filled with 5dmkii and 7d .mov files.

I am new to recording on flash cards and did not know it was important to retain the “directory structure”. Basically when i was transfering the Files from CF card to the harddrives i was trying to organize them as i went. I would open the DCMI folder and then transfer the entire contents of the containing folders onto the hardrive, only i would then give them a new name, for example changing “100EOS5D” to “myfolderename”.

Now i am desperately wanting to use the log and transfer in FCP with the new plugin for EOS and i keep getting the “invalid directories” error.

What is important for taking the intially stabs at this huge project, is to set the ins and outs on the clips before sending them to 422.

Have i destroyed my chance to use log & transfer in this way by changing the folder names?
