Cannot use Log & Transfer, Need to reconstruct directory structures
Posted by Tim Desrochers on July 17, 2010 at 5:58 pmHello,
I’ve got a fairly large project to edit starting on Monday the 19th, and I’m stuck right now, unable to Log and Transfer any of my AVCHD footage.
Prior to my ownership of FCS (and my knowledge that one must maintain directory structures in order for Final Cut to use .mts files), I copied over only the .mts files I needed. I subsequently formatted the cards and harddrives from the three cameras used, for another day of shooting.
Is there any way I can use all of this footage? I figure if it’s possible to reconstruct the directory structure, Final Cut might play along, but so far that strategy has gotten me nowhere.
Any help is much appreciated,

All the best,

July 17, 2010 at 7:18 pmHi,
I just returned from 6 months of filming abroad with stacks of Hard Drives filled with 5dmkii and 7d .mov files.I am new to recording on flash cards and did not know it was important to retain the “directory structure”. Basically when i was transfering the Files from CF card to the harddrives i was trying to organize them as i went. I would open the DCMI folder and then transfer the entire contents of the containing folders onto the hardrive, only i would then give them a new name, for example changing “100EOS5D” to “myfolderename”.
Now i am desperately wanting to use the log and transfer in FCP with the new plugin for EOS and i keep getting the “invalid directories” error.
What is important for taking the intially stabs at this huge project, is to set the ins and outs on the clips before sending them to 422.
Have i destroyed my chance to use log & transfer in this way by changing the folder names?

July 17, 2010 at 7:31 pmWell, if you didn’t retain the full directory, you are missing a lot of files that enable Log and Transfer to work properly. It not only looks at the folder structure, but at files INSIDE those folders. Files that relate to the video that was shot. If those files are missing, than FCP cannot convert the footage properly.
Now, not all hope is lost. The only thing that you can benefit from L&T is the addition of time of day code, and automatic addition of a reel number. Yes, this is pretty useful stuff for a pro, but people have gotten by without this for a long time. You can use Magic Bullet Grinder to convert the footage. That has a timecode number you can assign. And it imports it MUCH faster than FCP…it throws all the computer processors onto the job…so if you have a quad core mac, that’s 4x faster. Octo core, 8x faster.
With tapeless media you always always copy over the full file structure.

July 17, 2010 at 7:38 pmThanks for the reply Shane!
coupled with each .mov file there is a .THM file which i assume is the file info. all i really did was change the folder name. everything in the folder is the same as it was originally..
The reason i wanted to use log & transfer is that it is very convenient to be reviewing the footage and setting the In’s and the Out’s on each clip.
Is there a good way you know to do this besides log & transfer? and also. given that i still have all the THM files is there a way to teach FCP to recognize them.
thanks so so much for responding, !

July 17, 2010 at 10:15 pmInside your Main Folder you will have a DCIM Folder and MISC Folder. Inside your DCIM folder another folder will contain your footage (MOV and THM files). If you have the THM files, Log and Transfer will read your MOV’s.

July 17, 2010 at 10:57 pmYou can rebuild this one? Good to know. I think I tried and failed. To user error. Glad to know it works.

July 18, 2010 at 12:20 amLook at the card structure that a new card makes. Mimic it. Then follow Steve’s advice. He said it should work. The data apparently is in the THM files.

July 18, 2010 at 8:25 amI do a lot of this stuff for my clients.
For the future you can consider sending over the files on a hard disk, or Blu-ray disk, or even multiple DVD-Rs. I will do whatever it takes to import them in FCP and send back the project and media files on a small hard disk.
If its Canon files I can even stripe them with time code and reel numbers and transcode to ProResHQ.When you’re done with the project, I can help recreating a master from the originals which I will keep till the project is finished. So you have an off site backup as well.
Does this sound like a workable plan?

July 18, 2010 at 3:59 pmWell… for past videos you shot on the T2i or 550D (or 5D/7D) you can see in the video how to just add some files to your directory with your original .MOV files and get the E1 plugin to work with your 550D or T2i (or 5D/7D) in FCP. The files are all .THM files and all you really need to do is add them to your directory of original T2i .MOV files. If for some reason you have renamed the original .MOV files just rename the .THM files to the same name of the .MOV files from the T2i.
