Also for Hi-Res photos, I wouldn’t go any bigger than 1440 x 980 and Vegas likes PNG files.

Right click the photo, go to Switches and check the ‘reduce-interlace-flicker’ box.

I’m sorry but I can’t help you then, because I don’t use Vista and I’m not on a 64bit machine.

Sorry being brand new to Panasonic and HD I don’t quite understand the ‘scene’ files.

Thanks for your imput. Funny I just got back from another forum reading a 150 page thread on the HMC150. I supposed that P2 is much easier to edit though than the AVCHD. Also since I do plan to get a MacPro and Studio 2, I assume the license would also let me install it on my MBP for field use so I would have the FCP6 Also the fact that the 170 has FW so I can run my nNovia digital recorder whereas the 150 doesn’t.

Low Light better than the 2000? wow that’s better than 2 lux?

I also heard about the 150 in a podcast that the video isn’t quite a sharp in the 150 but compared to what?

Other than the price of the P2 cards (ugh!) the 170 probably seems the way to go for me. At current prices I cold sell the VX2000 with the accessories and the DSR250, still under warranty and have money left over after buying the 170. Plus now I get t9o shoot 16;9. 😉

Maybe your pass-through on the Digital 8 is not working. Do you have a different Analog/Digital converter you can try?

I don’t use Vista but XP and I use the Canopus ADVC100 converter box. I wouldn’t think that Vista is different.

Maybe try connecting the camera to a TV and play a tape ifyou have one to see if it works. How did you have the camera set? To VCR?

Wow fellows, what a great thread. Answers most of my questions in my first post above.

But I’m still not sure which to go with. I do legal and technical work with my DSR-250 and shoot my tourist and advertising (web vids)stuff with my VX2000. 250 is 19 lbs loaded and the 200 is 4 years old already. My only concern is the low light capabilities.

So I don’t do broadcast (now) so is the 4:2:2 dropdown really necessary for me? Up until now I’ve been exclusivelty Sony Vegas since 2003. But now I got my first Mac (MBP)and FCE and will upgrade my editing machine to a Mac Pro with Studio 2 and maybe CS4.

Yes, the AG-HMC150 is cheaper and AVC meaning the long GOP. While the 170 is P2 and I don’t know about the format and believe it or not still mixed up about bitrates.

So I guess both are good but which format is easier to edit and work with. Most of my technical stuff still renders to SD MPEG-1 and Multimedia CD-ROM’s due to our client’s netwoks. Hopefully we’ll up to MPEG-2 and DVD-ROM or network install depending on the client’s computers and networks. So I’d still be outputting SD @ 29.97fps for that work

I have heard that shooting in HD gives a much better video even when downconverting to SD.

I do have a few railfan and tourist DVD’s out, I wish I had an HD cam for those. I just need to make a decision but don’t know enough to make an intelligent one.

That’s why I posted above about the 2 cameras I’m considering. Not sure if I want to go P2 or SD/SDHC cards.

Won’t be using Vegas for this stuff cause I’m not using BootCamp to install XP on my MBP. Soon to get Mac Pro maybe, but then I’ll have Final Cut Studio 2! I am getting more proficient with FCE.

Also isn’t there a big difference between editing with P2 and the AVCHD? Also you are so correct about the MBP. Easy to change configurations in a snap! Don’t need the AD Converter box on the road, so the external HD can go FW and I’ll get the adapter for the Pcie slot for the cards (P2 or SD).

ha ha have to be at the hotel at night cause on the train we’re up front filming.

Well, congradulations and welcome to the field.

Your questions;
#1 yes always make an audio recording and give to the CR. I have a small Sony auto-reverse cassett recorder hooked up to my mixer. I also had a Marantz PRM660 digital audio recorder that records to CF cards so I can give the CR either or download the audio to his/her laptop. I believe you can get the Sony at Markertek for about $120.

#2 sounds okay to me if that’s what you want to do.

#3 I will answer privately and give you our Legal Video Group address so you can join and get more info.
