I tried it but it didn’t work. But I’m glad to know about that right-click command. Thank you.

“direct FW HDV->ProRes does indeed capture TC just fine. I’ve used this for quite some time. yes I have recaptured this way…”

I assume you mean that you recaptured using your Panasonic deck and 422 control, not firewire. When I try to recapture a ProRes clip using firewire, I get an error message saying that I need a controllable device. The Log and Capture window won’t appear with the Firewire HDV to ProRes setting.

Many thanks for this helpful information. It makes me wonder why my Intensity Pro card won’t do what the Kona does. I have no problem sending HDV, TC and all, from the Sony deck to FCP via HDMI and the Intensity card . But I can’t get this and deck control too, which makes recapturing and batch capture impossible. I wonder what the Kona card is doing that the Intensity isn’t. The sticking point seems to be that FCP turns up an error message when Deck Control and Capture aren’t both set to Firewire.

What I got was just a warning. I clicked on “OK” and this allowed me to bypass the warning and install FCP 6. Sorry that I don’t know how to get past the roadblock you’ve run into.

I think you’re right. I was afraid that this might be the case. I wonder if Twixtor’s algorithm avoids this type of artifact.

Many thanks for the workaround suggestions.

Thanks again. I tried this but it led to the same artifacting. I’ll try capturing the HDV clip using ProRes via HDMI (rather than doing a software conversion) and report back.

Many thanks. I tried this but Motion doesn’t seem to have ProRes as a Project Property; so I tried DVC 100 but got the same artifacts.

From the research I’ve done the safe title area is somewhere between 3.5 and 5 percent of the linear dimensions of the frame. There seems to be no universal standard. FCP’s safe title area is closer to the 5 per cent end of the range.

    Bob,

Thanks for your kind and helpful advice.

I tried again with Compressor, this time going into all the little sub-menus and choosing the “best” settings. The earlier problem may have been that I didn’t set “field dominance” for the 29.97i file. This time I did and the results were fine, pretty much like a test that the video house produced in DVC100 at 29.97i. Processing this material in Compressor took a VERY long time, about one minute for each second of the original file!
