Hi Todd…
I understand completely your need to save the space.
I’d suggest two alternate routes…Create the HDV Matrox project to capture only. But set your scratch disks to the main media location. Then simply import your your captures into the 10bit job after you’re done. This way you’ll get the AVI’s not the MPEG’s
or
Capture the HDV via Component HD (if your deck has that spicket) with the Matrox MPEG 2 I Frame Codec (which can be 10bit). You will save TONS of drive space over Uncompressed HD and the quality is very very good.
My comment about the timecode and HDV was really an aside, as… if you could batch capture the source in the different wrapper you’d be set. That’s all

Hi Todd,
Here’s a quick way to relink you missing assets:
1) Go to the Project Panel and set the Filter Field to Status
2) type the word OFF into the Filter Field. (short for Offline)
3) This will reveal all you unlinked assets.
4) Shift or control select them (if they are in different bins)
5) Right click and link the media.
6) PPro will prompt you to link the first asset.
7) Find it and link it. BUT sine you media is all in the same folder, it should find the rest you selected automatically. Now about your issue, I notices something interesting.
Your HDV files are “.MPEG”If you captured all the HDV in an Axio HDV project, Matrox wraps HDV (native codec) in an .AVI file.
I have worked with .MPEG files before on the RT.X2 and remember that while they do work, Matrox goes thru a conforming stage with them (which generates an orange coforming message). Since you can relink the media I assume you are seeing the standard RED “media offline” message.
At any rate….as HDV does not batch capture frame accurately, you are hosed for this one, but hopefully the procedure outlined above will make it less painful to relink.
For the next project, double check that you star the project from a Matrxo HDV project, and not and Adobe HDV project (sorry, I hope that doesn’t sound condescending).
See if that helps….and I’d alternately suggest actually staring with and Matrox MPEG 2 I frame as opposed to native HDV.
Lemme know…I’d be intersted to find this out.
Hope this helps,

hmmm…
render farming for Premiere….
that would be cool…but I don’t think so….

hmmm.
is the media all contained within the same folder or split amongst several locations?

The degredation might be due to the fact that the rendering while working in Premiere is using a different codec from the FLV file itself.
Interesting that Flash appears to be optimized for multi generational rendering. So it holds up under export in this case.
Great info to know….
Thanks,

Hey Todd…
Odd, as I use RTX2 (and have used Axio as well) to edit HDV…
this has never cropped up as an issue…
Is all you media in the same place…
OR
are you using removable storage where drive letters and hence paths might change as you add and remove volumes from the system?
If that’s the case…
Note your drive letters once linked…
then if you make changes to the system…work to make the letters the same before reopening the project….

I used to train folks on various NLE’s.
Coming from tape myself, I always spent hours demoing and training on the 3 point and 4 point editing techniques.
Once FCP and PPro came along, more and more often, people would politely ask me, “but can’t I just drag it on to the timeline?”
I would sigh and grimace…and say “yup you can do that.”
Starting to use PPro @ V2, the most frustrating thing for me was the inability to handle split track audio and no source/destination track patching. How on earth could this be called “Pro” when you had to deal with audio in such an arcane way. (Fill Left/right…WTH?)
CS3 has been better in this regard with the ability to define how you handle stereo source.
CS4 looks like it’s about where I’d want this feature to be with true S/D track patching for the more traditional editor, but not giving up on it’s “drag and drop”ness for the new media guys.
On the other hand, The audio mixer and routing system in Premiere is awesome! So I found it ironic that they could get one part so right, and the other part so wrong.
My second knock is the trim window. It feels pretty light weight compared to other apps. And it’s audio performance seems pretty inconsistent. For much of my work, I don’t have to use it, so I don’t.
Finally RAM RAM RAM….I am chomping at the bit to go 64 bit and add more RAM…yes I know about PPro being a set of 32bit CPU tasks, but as long as I have some room to move, that will be great!
The other thing I am looking forward to is creating nests more easily. A question about this for CS4 users….can you direct the nesting to a single destination timeline, or does it have to create a new timeline for each individual nest? That could get a little clunky in the project window.

“Is there a way to re-export a .flv file from Premiere without compressing it again? ”
Anytime you make an adjust to a media clip (via your touch up edits) you’re essentially creating new frames that didn’t exist before, and thus will need to be re-encoded/compressed again, thus quality will suffer a bit.
I’m not sure, but for speed of transfer sake, you might look into solutions like:
Digital Rapids: Copper
Digidesign: Digidelivery
Not sure if they’ll help, but work a google.
hope this helps,

Hey Matt…
Page Up/Page down is the default for prev/next edit navigation.
You might look at Keyboard Customization functions in the edit menu. In fact, I think Adobe ships PPro with sets for FCP and Avid users (where there are equivalent functions anyway).
We use 8 Systems running CS3 on a SAN here and I am quite pleased.
Having cut on a fair share of NLE’s myself there are always things I’d like to have from one system in another.
My systems are configured with Matrox RT.X2 hardware though, so I’m a little spoiled I suppose. Matrox’s CC is quite good for primary and secondary.
Sorry for your frustration.
Keep asking questions…we’ll try to help if we can.
