Edit on a Laptop, Render on a Desktop?
I am running Adobe Production Premium on a Dell Latitude D820 with 1.83Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HDD. It works pretty well for editing video, even HD video. But when I render video the computer is very slow to respond and I can’t use it for other tasks. I can’t complain about that, I never owned a PC that could render video and do much else at the same time. On top of that, though, I can’t undock my laptop or shut it down, or take it to meetings or do the other things I got a laptop to do.
So, can’t I get a desktop to do this for me?
I could get a desktop and purchase another license of Premiere, but that is expensive and I have to upgrade it whenever I upgrade my Adobe Suite. I tried Sorenson Squeeze, but I have to export the video as an avi, mov or whatever on a networked drive and then do to the desktop and render it with Sorenson Squeeze to H.264 (or WMV, or whatever I need). I don’t know, that just seems like it defeats the purpose to go through all those steps. Isn’t there a plugin or something I can install on the desktop that can render from the prproj file? I’ve heard After Effects does something similar, but renders to an image sequence. Is there something similar for Premiere that renders to other formats?
I can’t be the only one with this problem. I know there are other people out there running Premiere on a laptop, and I know they can’t enjoy turning their laptop into a brick for 3 or 5 or 8 hours at a time while it renders. What kind of set ups to people really have? (I work in a small marketing group and am a jack of all trades, so I am not an expert and don’t have any contact with anyone who is)
Am I thinking about this wrong?
