in the future if you’re worried about a visual match to the offline, I might suggest that you export it as a clip and lay it on a higher track In the PPro sequence that you can subsuquently mute/unmute to double check your accuracy.
If you disconnect the media in the Project panel in the and reconnect it to the online material….
this clips in the sequence will also be linked to that media. Everything should line up.Alex

So when you link you clips in the project Panel to the RED media….
you still have replace edits?
that doesn’t make sense.are the red files the same length as the Pro Res media?

Well maybe….except….how will you know what those will be until you edit?
If you do things in a more linear process it might work better….
1) edit in PPro with all Low lowres material
2) Get to “picture lock” meaning you edit timing and selects are pretty much they way you want them.
3) Link all footage back to Hi res material in PPro
4) Duplicate this sequence and make rename something like FX so that when you start replacing clips with AE comps you still have your master edit with all your edits in it as a safety copy of your seq.
5) in the new FX sequence…. replace those clips with AE comps and build fx in AE.Alex

Here’s my guess…
PPro: clips point to media on drives
Dynamic link creates soft linked clip to an AE COMP that lives inside an AE Project.
That AE Project independently link to media on its own, not thru the PPro Project.
so if you relink the media in PPro to clips at a different location, it will not relink your AE clips automatically to hi-res material. as the AE Project handles it’s linking to media separately.
You will still also need to relink your media on the AE side to connect it to the hi-res working material.
But if your project material is well organized and has the same name….or at least a good logical naming convention….this is not a big deal.

I think there is some confusion about what dynamic link offers.
I doesn’t magically make AE real time.
AE and PPro can share a ram cache, so if it’s cached in ram in AE, you’ll probably be able to achieve decent frame rates in PPro.
The true “dynamic” character of the link…is that in PPro it’s essentially a soft link to what can be a much more complex comp in AE that can be updated in AE at any time without the endless import and re-editing in PPro.
Some people use the “create proxy” command in AE to help things in in this process. yes this is a render…. but the advantage is that there is no continual re importing of revisions into PPro over and over again as the AE comp is iterated.
hope that helps.

Ok…that was sort of where I was going with my first lkine of thought…
something to do with hardware mercury….that’s way I was looking for a non mercury levels filter.
Should have thought of that….good to know though.
thought process might be then….Mercury hardware for perfomance editing…mercury software for final output…

January 4, 2012 at 5:37 pm in reply to: Replace clip in sequence, keep transitions. Possible? No…you can option drag from the viewer. You don’t have to go back to the bin.
option dragging from the bin assumes you had previously marked the shot.

Well…
Flip the Process…
Bring your PPro Project into AE…
add the Alpha GFX there and output as a new clip.
then output through Ppro?
I agree this needs to be addressed…I’m just trying to help you get it done…

That’s great!
[Oliver Peters] “3. Temporarily hide the folder of proxy media at the Finder level. For instance, move the folder to the Trash.”
optionally….you can temporarily rename the inclusive media folder. i usually append something like “_offline” to the end of the folder name
I get paranoid about the trash can….
🙂
Happy new year to you sir!

Hi Oliver,
I just double checked, and it appears you are correct regarding the creation of a “offline project”
[Oliver Peters] “The reason to do this is to create a new “online” (full res) project that only contains the clips used in the timeline.”
So it’s not so much that you want to consolidate media. You just want a version that is limited to only the clips used?
Hmmm…..ok
If you were to…
1) Make a New Project
2) Import your previous Project into it, this will give you the option to select the entire project or only the sequence(s) you want
into it.
3) This will result in a Bin Folder that contains that sequence and sources from the original project. I’m not sure about the original bin structure being maintained during import. (this is completely non destructive BTW and won’t harm your original project).
4) Then you can select the sources in the Project Panel, right click and “make offline” but “leave them on disk”. Thus, disconnecting the media, but leaving the files on the drive.
5) Select the sources in the project panel again, right click and “relink” to the Full Resolution material. Some notes….
From memory, I don’t know whether just the used sources will get imported, when you Import just the conform seqeunce into your clean project. But the project panel metadata has columns for Audio/Video usage which can help you determine that pretty quickly by column sorting. If you reconnect items that are unused in the sequence, the usage column will be blank for those items. It’s pretty easy then to select the unused items and delete them from the project. Also PPro will warn you if you are deleting items used in the sequence.
From there if you wanted to make a media consolidated version of this project, you could use the Project manager from there.
Does that help?
