    Hey!

You’re right. That does look suspiciously similar, and four years old.

Still wouldn’t mind knowing how it’s done though. Would much appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Andrew,

I tried an Adjustment Layer and I can use it to make masks but not to paint directly on. The paint tools won’t seem to let me get at it. I’m probably missing something obvious.

Just say I wanted to paint a word or shape freehand, I’d like to keep that on a separate layer (to the layer I’m painting over). Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks kindly for your help, so far.

PS – LOVE your Action Movie Essentials and other DVD’s. I’m a stunt performer (IMDB.com me for credits) and they will definitely come in handy for my own short films, etc. Would love a good tutorial on removing wires and rigs… on moving shots (not plate shots). Haven’t come across an AE one that doesn’t give that shimmering effect when the footage plays in real-time. You are the man to do it!!!

    Thanks Mylenium.

I had the masks set to Add and then Invert. Not sure if this makes a difference but now it’s set to Subtract all is fine and working.

    Much appreciated.

April 5, 2006 at 5:12 pm in reply to: Cutting out video?

    Thanks kindly for your reply,

In the meantime, I’ve been doing some tests and have indeed discovered a few different ways to ‘cut out’ video… and I’m very happy that the Mask does ‘stick with’ the layer no matter what transformations occur.

I’d love to know how to use a Video Matte though. I remember being able to use a black and white (rotoscoped) video as an alpha channel but am not sure how to do it in After Effects. As I recall, there were two main uses: 1) To superimpose a moving subject over a background and 2) Using the alpha channel as a ‘shape’ filled with some other video.

How can I do these in After Effects? Would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    ALEX

    Hi Tom again,

Sorry for long time before reply (I’m in Australia, so I just got up).

Ahhh… you’re right. Me press wrong key! Der.

    Thanks for that.

Still, I’d love to know how I can access the Markers. Not sure if that’s how Final Cut works with them but I’ve come from another editing system, where you can click on the Markers – add info, etc – and physically drag them to where you want them on the Timeline. I don’t seem to be able to do this in Final Cut.

    Is that normal?

Thanks so much for your expertise. Appreciated.

    Hi Tom,

I’m using Timeline markers, and I tried your test – putting a few markers on the Timeline and pressing Ctrl ‘… but still nothing happens. The only way I can clear the markers is using Delete All in the Mark menu.

If it is a keyboard language problem, how do I fix that?

It’s a strange world in computers.

Thanks kindly for your help so far.

    Cheers,

    ALEX
