Markers – How to edit/move/delete them?

Go to the marker and press Cmd-`. Control-` will delete all markers. There is a keyboard shortcut for moving a marker later in time, but not earlier. All these functions are available under the Mark menu.

I tried your solution and it works… and it doesn’t.

The commands all work from the Mark menu as you advised but my ‘Marker’ keyboard shortcuts don’t work – just M to set a marker and that’s it. The others you mentioned do nothing.

Weird?

At least, I can work from the menu… but knowing I should have keyboard shortcuts bugs me.

There are two types of markers, clip markers and timeline markers. Which kind are you using? If they’re clip markers the clip has to be selected. If they’re timeline markers, no clip can be selected. Add some markers to a timeline. Make sure nothing is selected and press Control-` . Does it work? If it’s not working you have a problem with your keyboard language. If you’re using the English language version of the application, the keyboard has to be set to US standard.

Hi Tom,

I’m using Timeline markers, and I tried your test – putting a few markers on the Timeline and pressing Ctrl ‘… but still nothing happens. The only way I can clear the markers is using Delete All in the Mark menu.

If it is a keyboard language problem, how do I fix that?

It’s a strange world in computers.

Ctrl ‘

This is the wrong shortcut. It’s Control-`, that’s Control and the grave key. The backward accent mark next to the number 1. It’s listed in the Mark menu. Is that what you’re using?

The keyboard language is set in International in the system preferences.

Still, I’d love to know how I can access the Markers. Not sure if that’s how Final Cut works with them but I’ve come from another editing system, where you can click on the Markers – add info, etc – and physically drag them to where you want them on the Timeline. I don’t seem to be able to do this in Final Cut.

Is that normal?

If you’re on the marker you can press ` or M to add info to the marker dialog box. You can’t grab or move markers. You can extend markers, move markers later in time, and move the playhead to a marker with the shortcut menu. Marker improvements are often requested. Go to feedback and add your .02 to the list of what you want.

I use Final Cut Express 1.0.1 and want to combine (concatenate) two sequences and save the chapter markers. I know that Duplicating
a sequence preserves markers, but how do preserve markers from a sequence I want to copy onto the end of the first (duplicated) sequenc?

You can’t do what you want to do. If you’ve made markers in a sequence, on the timeline ruler, and nest that sequence inside another, the markers appear as clip markers on the nest. You have to manually reenter new timeline markers and make them chapter markers.
