[Tom Wolsky] “The in point marks the clip at the playhead in front of frame to include the frame you’re looking at, and the out point always marks the edit after the frame you’re looking, to include the frame you’re looking at. It always behaves this way”

Sorry, but I believe this is just plain WRONG! If you are looking at a frame of vision and you mark THAT frame as the OUT point then THAT frame remains exactly as it is when you do the edit. It is not included as part of the edit. THAT frame is the OUT point. ipso facto the previous frame is the last frame of the new edit or new clip. This is the standard way insert editing works.

[Paul King] “Was I drowned out by “I want to make a DVD from the timeline cause I cant be arsed authoring a DVD” – hell yeah.”

Paul if this really was the case then that speaks volumes. I can’t really believe that. If that is where their focus lies it doesn’t bode all that well for professionals who don’t really make alot of DVD’s but who just print to tape alot. . . I just read this thread after posting my earlier response. . .Oh well.

    Gday Paul,

    Cool thanks for that.

Mate the Axio is cool bananas, it’s working out great for what we do, although I’d have to say that I probably expected a few more real time transitions than there are. (I’m still on 1.5, we won’t be getting 2 till the new financial year sometime) Exporting MPEG2, QT’s and WMV’s absolutely rocks. In fact there is a chance, a chance, that we might end up getting another one soooon. Maybe. But all in all I love it.

PPro though is a slightly different story. Some great features, some really dumb ones. If I list off a few of these maybe you can tell me if Version 2 has swept them away??

Logging and Capturing: Firstly when I’m logging tapes I should be able to just use the tab key to enter info for my next clip after logging, no clicking should be required. Also margins or handles are just that, margins, not new in and out points. It’s nice not to have to type leading zeros ala edit (Yes I know you could hit the ‘del’ key but still…) Also sometimes, I can’t work out why, the out point doesn’t update to be the new in point for the next clip, not always, just sometimes. A bit frustrating. It would be nice to be able to log to another job for later capturing as well. What is good is being able to do other stuff while the capture window’s open, that’s pretty cool. It would be nice to see just a log list where you can see how much capturing time is required for each tape really easily. Then of course there’s the audio mono/stereo issue which we all know about, not to mention what I discovered in my first post.

Timeline Editing: I should not have to change tools in order to do a rolling edit or to have to adjust audio keyframes. This is a bit annoying. I should be able to mute OR solo all tracks via the timeline. I should be able to copy and paste transitions and apply a default transition throughout a region and why are all default transitions centred on cut. I don’t get that. Maybe it’s just me but the most natural one would be start on cut, but anyway you should be able to pre determine that without having to go to the effects panel. Also why can’t I save custom made transitions? You can do it with effects, why not transitions?? I should be able to select a region not just clips. I hate not being able to do this to quickly delete a section of the timeline. I should be able to razor clip/s on ‘targeted tracks only’ at CTI point. I should be able to see all the source/fx info within the clip on the timeline. Also edit had this neat thing which was Shift+R – replace clip, about the closest thing you’d get to a one point edit where it would replace the clip on the timeline that the CTI was over with the clip in the source viewer (from its In point). A beautiful feature that I really miss. Trim clips In and Out point to CTI is great and I use that all the time. Now you see if PP was a mode based editing system doing this in insert mode would keep the clip’s relative point in the timeline the same but adjust other clips accordingly. It’d be great to have ‘Extend’ clips In and Out point to CTI too. Editing audio at sample rate is very cool, I really like that one. Slipping and sliding is cool, although it took me a little while to adjust to slipping the other way. As I was moving the cursor to the left I thought I was moving the In point earlier not vice versa, but hey I got over that one. But why can’t you type in an amount that you want to slip or slide in some sort of dialog box? Same goes for trimming a clip on the timeline. The stereo/mono thing we won’t mention.

Bins: It’s nice to instantly see which clips you’ve used but overall the bin management is not that great. Scrolling clips in bins would be nice as would setting in and out points and duration. If I import something into a bin it should be a good boy (or girl) and go to the end of the queue and not cut in wherever it feels like it. Dang that gets on my wick. The bin ends up messy with sideways scrolling and in no real order at all. I know you can ‘clean up’ but nevertheless. . . And if I determine a hierarchy when I’m in list mode well they should pay attention and stay that way when I switch to icon mode. Very naughty. It makes grouping things a tad difficult. Having a few more picon sizes with a bit more info on them would be handy as well. Not to mention having more than one bin open and being able to quickly access them rather than having to search for the appropriate folder going up and down like a flipping yo-yo.

That’s really all I can think of off the top of my head at the moment.

What I’ve been discussing, or rambling on about, are the basic editing functions that I use every day and I don’t know if PP was originally designed to be a full on professional NLE tool or not but it is interesting that you can come off an edit system that’s been EOL’d for 4 years and onto a brand new up to date system and still find some basic editing functions lacking. I mean all the real time stuff is cool and the effects are great, the colour correction is top notch, you know all the techy, sort of high end stuff has really moved along in leaps and bounds, but: aesthetics, elegance, . . . well I believe there’s a bit to go, but Adobe seems to be listening and we’ve got some great pros on our side so all in all I can’t complain. We’re moving forwards and that’s surely gotta be a good thing.

What makes this job/industry so great to work in? Well for me, the fact that it is constantly changing, never standing still, it makes life a bit more interesting and keeps me on me toes and resistant to cobwebs. Gotta love it!

    Thanks for listening.
