They’re easy enough to manage but don’t come with the level of support of SmallTree and SNS. The Enhance product is fairly easy to configure and manage, but it’s more for IT people already familiar with Linux and network storage. Synology and QNAP products are appliances: I wouldn’t expect much support from them for hard-to-troubleshoot scenarios. Replacing a drive or a component – easy. Figure out why the bandwidth drops to 20MB/s in certain scenarios – you’d need good support for that and in that case, I’d go with SNS and SmallTree.
Did I make it easier or harder to make a decision? 🙂 I hope easier.

Yes and the fact that it’s not a RAID controller but an HBA is perfect for your goal of “just mounting some drives”. Have you tried contacting Areca support? I’d suspect either an OS or a driver limitation, or some sort of incompatibility between the HBA and the expander, or a misconfiguration where the HBA is unable to use the expander’s functionality and is contiguously mapping one device per lane. Possibly it’s something very simple.

If you like the clean design of Macs, I’d then look at Lenovo Y500, Y580 and W530. The first one is the best “bang for the buck”, while the last one – most “pro” in terms of components, design, expandability, enterprise class warranty and support options. The first two can be “nicely configured” for editing for under $1.2K, the W530 – for around $1.6K: 16GB RAM, Core i7, 1080p display, discrete graphics that works well in CS6.
There are many other options (including HP, Dell, Toshiba, Asus and aforementioned Sager), yet Lenovo models strike me as a good balance between clean design, power and value.

Given no hard video requirements (such as, “sustain 300MB/s for five clients”), I’d look at two options, in addition to what Eric said:
1. A NAS appliance from Synology or QNAP – some can handle aggregated bandwidth of over 1GB/s with dual 10GbE ports. These aren’t expandable or upgradeable beyond manufacturer specs.
2. A multi-purpose NAS/SAN box such as Enhance Tech UltraShare NS. Those are highly expandable and customizable, can wear multiple hats (DAS, SAN, NAS), and are still significantly less costly than a dedicated purpose-built video NAS.

Could you describe the “off-site” part, still? How do you envision off-site access? Editing? Viewing? If only viewing – streaming? Syncing? Via RDC?
Also, what type of access will the video coordinator need?
Bob’s right that there is not enough info: file formats, apps used, type of access, scalability requirements.
NAS appliances from Synology and QNAP may work for modest requirements but no guarantees: they don’t offer support editing workflows.
If we’re talking about a single seat editor access, additional users being “read-only”, then the most common setup is DAS on a Mac Pro shared over the network, $5K for 32TB, nearly infinitely scalable.

1. Can you install AE on a server?
2. How do you run a script on a remote system?I’ll take a swing:
1. I haven’t tried it; it’s not formally supported; yet unless Adobe specifically prevents it, it will install. Another option, which I’d personally prefer: install it on a virtual Win7 or Win8 machine instead, under a hyper-visor on that server. Much cleaner, more portable, easier to manage. Bottom line, it’s possible to install AE on a server.
