That’s the key, I am afraid, and it’ll likely take too long via any regular ISP other than Google Fiber or top tier FiOS or similar service. Even with those, unless you’re on SLA or business class service, throttling happens.
I’d look for ISPs, colocation companies, cloud service providers that work with end-users directly. It may end up fairly expensive though, possibly more so than FedExing the drives.

Can’t speak for Bob; for me personally, there’s a limit to how much time I can spend analyzing someone’s specific configuration and workflow demands, and producing sensible recommendations, before it becomes prohibitive (gotta eat, too). IMHO, this is the situation where I’d contact Bob directly and request a paid consultation.
That said, the path of least resistance and most value is NAS. Put a decent NAS front end on top of your existing iSCSI and DAS boxes, with 10GbE links where they matter, and you will likely see significant speed increases at a fairly small cost:
– $2-4K for a WSE or WSS 2012 R2 box (SuperMicro, Dell, HP tower or 1/2U server)
– $1K per 8-port 10GbE switch
– $300-400 per 10GbE cardWindows 8 clients will get the benefit of near-line speeds of SMB3 (i.e. close to possible ceiling of 10Gbs on 10GbE links); Win7 clients get the benefit of SMB2.
The beauty of it is if you’re still not satisfied with speeds or latencies, the 10GbE equipment will work for iSCSI purposes with SNS and Tiger SAN management software; and that WS 2012 box can still be used for other purposes. In other words, it’s nearly fool-proof.

Unlikely – like Eric said, the bottleneck is likely in the QT32 codec.
You can fire up HP Performance Advisor (already installed or a free download from HP) and keep an eye on GPU utilization. Also may be helpful to take a look at Resource Monitor (Accessible via Windows Task Manager) while exporting to see what your disk utilization is. If you’re on Windows 8, Task Manager will show disk utilization as well.

Not sure about 10 bays, but for 8, one of the cheapest is Sans Digital TR8M.
After using it for a while (like I did), you’d probably wish for something more robust, like the much more expensive CineRAID CR-T12E, that also requires a good SAS RAID card or an HBA, but you aren’t looking for “robust”.

That’d piss me off too. 🙂 These MBAs don’t use SATA – they use PCIe SSDs which do away with the SATA 6Gbs speed limit. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them clocking 1GB/s in near future.
Not sure how these MBAs would fare for serious editing though given their relatively slow integrated graphics and limited memory.

Another potential bottleneck is the SATA controller inside J4…
300/400MB/s write/read speeds sounds a little low for an 512GB 840, especially if it’s new: supposed to be 330/520. When you benchmark, do at least three runs, preferably after a restart.
What are the speeds of your internal 830?

What’s the host system? Have you tried clocking a single 840 (not RAIDed) – have you been getting 500MB/s read speeds on those?
There are several potential bottlenecks with J4:
– individual drive speeds (500+MB/s reads, 300MB+/s writes with 512GB Sammie 840), accounting also for performance degradation associated with age, fill rate, etc.
– TB speed limit of 10Gbs (1.25GB/s) and its (very small) processing / driver overhead
– OS / host system and software RAID overheadMy hunch that it’s the host system that can’t keep up. Let me know what you get from individual SSD benchmarks and when you stripe, say, two or three (rather than all four).
