H.264 is a codec that’s efficient on space – i.e. maximum quality in the minimum bits possible. You’re right: it’s inter-frame, i.e. a group of frames is encoded together; to decode a single frame, the whole group must be decoded.
ProRes is an intra-frame codec that is much less efficient in terms of space, but is much less taxing on computer.
An inter-frame such as H.264 can easily be 10 times more efficient than an intra-frame one like MJPEG, ProRes or DV, e.g. a 100Mbit/s ProRes stream could be encoded into a 10Mbit’s H.264 w/o significant loss of quality.

Also, once you are done with data recovery attempts, and if any of the data on the server is critical, consider beefing up your data resiliency. It’s a combination of appropriate redundancy plus on- and off-site backup.

– does your memory utilization get close to 100%? Check in Windows Task Manager or Resource Monitor.
– What are your memory allocation settings in Pr? (Preferences – General)

There is a very slim chance of data recovery – you need to follow HP techs’ advice and controller docs to pursue it.

Andrew, there is a small possibility of data recovery is the drive(s) was/were marked offline, together with the whole volume. The drive may be OK but say if it doesn’t respond within a certain timeout set by a controller, the controller marks it offline. If there is no redundancy left to work with, the controller marks the whole volume offline. If the drive is actually healthy, re-inserting it sometimes does the magic trick of putting it back online; and sometimes, there is more to it than just re-insertion.
I’d recommend:
– researching the RAID controller docs (P400?) for exact steps in trying to bring the drive(s) back online
– go to HP support forums – lots of very knowledgeable folks there – see if they have advice.Alex (DV411)

Ask Apricorn: the array is managed by their own BIOS, not Max OSX directly. They may have implemented TRIM at the controller or driver level. I haven’t found anything in their specs though.

The drive is fast enough over FW800 to handle ProRes 422 HQ easily. Over FW800, it’s about as fast as an internal 7200rpm drive on MBP, and a bit faster than a 5400rpm one.

Apricorn specifically – no; SSDs – yes.
There is a definite “wow” factor in boot times, still image editing, launching applications – but this is more of a “wow” thing than any measurable productivity.
The benefit is pretty insignificant for video editing applications with the exception of short sequences of ultra-hi-res (4K, 5K) uncompressed files.
Three internal spinning drives in RAID0 will have data rates of 200-400MB/s on a Mac Pro with a 6TB capacity for less than $600. So it 10 times the capacity at half the price with half the speed – or 20 times the money for only twice the speed.
Granted, to get that kind of a speed from spinning drives, it will cost quite a bit more than $1400: the controller and the 8-bay box will run about $1.6K before you add drives. So if you have to have that speed (but not the capacity or redundancy) – SSDs (and Apricorn) make sense.
