Raid 5 With 2 Failed Drives
Hi Team,
i have a Hp server HP DL380G5 Server running on RAID 5 on 4 drives.
Drive 01 failed about 2 moths ago
Drive 02 Failed YesterdayOnly that when the drives were both plugged out and reinserted back on the server they both came alive, on restarting the array collapsed and showed data loss.
now we rebuild the Array with the 4 Drives back together only that on running R-Studio cant seem to get any data.
was it a mistake to rebuild the array with the drive 01 that had failed 2 months ago?
if i image the drives 00,02,03. without drive 01 and rebuild a virtual array can i get the data?
The partition is and EXT3 partition on REDHUT Linux 5
kindly let me have your thoughts on this.

You lost your data when the second drive failed. Everything after that is moot. Sorry.
Lesson: when a drive in a RAID-5 set dies, replace it ASAP so the RAID can rebuild itself. A RAID-5 with a dead drive is as vulnerable as a RAID-0.

you are screwed. You have lost all your data.
If a RAID 5 drive fails, it’s YOUR JOB to replace it.Hope you don’t lose clients because of this. No one can help you now.

Andrew, there is a small possibility of data recovery is the drive(s) was/were marked offline, together with the whole volume. The drive may be OK but say if it doesn’t respond within a certain timeout set by a controller, the controller marks it offline. If there is no redundancy left to work with, the controller marks the whole volume offline. If the drive is actually healthy, re-inserting it sometimes does the magic trick of putting it back online; and sometimes, there is more to it than just re-insertion.
I’d recommend:
– researching the RAID controller docs (P400?) for exact steps in trying to bring the drive(s) back online
– go to HP support forums – lots of very knowledgeable folks there – see if they have advice.Alex (DV411)

Go to https://www3.hp.com/t5/ProLiant-Servers-Netservers/bd-p/bsc-431“>HP support forums, have your RAID controller model number ready as well as your hard drives’ part numbers, post your question there.
There is a very slim chance of data recovery – you need to follow HP techs’ advice and controller docs to pursue it.

Also, once you are done with data recovery attempts, and if any of the data on the server is critical, consider beefing up your data resiliency. It’s a combination of appropriate redundancy plus on- and off-site backup.

As Alex said, check with your controller manufacturer. You may be able to revive if you don’t initialize when you rebuild the array. Basically, they may have you delete the array, create the array using the exact same parameters – without initializing, then import in Disc Manager. This process has worked with a Promise RAID controller that kept losing drives due to a malfunctioning power supply.

Agree with you Alex. Data on the RAID drives need to be recovered as soon as it’s lost, weather by using recovery tools or services. Else, It might be overwritten or too damaged to be recovered. Even the recovery services wouldn’t be able to trace overwritten data on the RAID drives.
