Hi Gary,
Just another question that perhaps you can answer. Ideally what we’d like to do is integrate the use of a very simple graphics application (I’m talking Powerpoint simple) on the same computer that the operator can use to type up some results while the video replay is running.
I’ve just tested it, so I push ‘play’ on the file I’ve just recorded, then Apple+Tab to PP to quickly type some results in, which will then be outputted from the full screen slideshow mode in PP via a signal converter to our live monitor after the replay finishes. However, when I go into PP, AJAs default video output kicks in (in my case some colour bars) and the video playing in AJA TV or VTR Xchange pauses. Is there a way to keep the video playing out while the operator works in PP?
I tried the ‘hold last application’ option in the AJA Control Panel but that didn’t work and other than that I’m out of ideas.I hope that all makes sense.

Gary, that works perfectly. I’ve just tested it and it couldn’t be easier. I really appreciate your help on that one.

Great answer Rafael, that’s much simpler. We also need to play out replays of what’s just been recorded. Is it possible to play something direct from Quicktime Pro out of a capture card, or do we need to bring it into FCP to do that?

Just had a quick scan through the posts so someone may have answered these.
4) Clip usage info…
Bottom left corner of the timeline there’s a little arrow. Click that and then tick ‘Show duplicate frames’. This will then mark your clips in the timeline with a colour which indicates where there are any frames that appear more than once in the timeline.
However I do really feel that this is a terrible way of telling you that you’ve used clips more than once! A simple tick in a browser column would be easier. Something I like to do if there’s a clip I think I may have used twice if select the timeline, press Apple+F and then search for the name of the clip you might have used twice. If you have, there will be two clips highlighted in the timeline – again, not ideal, but it’s a way to do it.9)Audio or Video only
I prefer the shortcuts Shift+F5 to lock the audio tracks (Shift+F4 to lock video tracks), then F10 to overwrite edit the video/audio only into the timeline – doesn’t work for when you need to do an insert edit. For that, the best I’ve found is to press Shift+F7 then Shift+F8 to de-select an audio destination for channels 1+2. This obviously only works as long as your sound is recorded with only two channels. I don’t think there’s a ‘Clear all audio destinations’ shortcut but I hope someone can correct me on that.One of my favourite time-savers is Option+H (opens the keyboard layout window). From there you can search for a shortcut you think might exist (incidentally it searches in the way that the AE search tool works, not the Apple+F way), and also add/change shortcuts to suit your editing style.

Hi Rob,
I read recently that people were exporting Quicktime reference movies from FCP (which is obviously quicker than self-contained movies) and then taking advantage of Compressor’s multi-core processing that way. Personally I haven’t had cause to test this workflow yet so I couldn’t give you a difinitive answer as to whether itindeed works, but you might want to give it a try. Post the results here too!

Hi Wayne. That’s an interesting bit of information I wasn’t aware of. Could you explain why that is, or perhaps link to the Apple support page that does?

Are you working in a progressive timeline? That has caused problems for me in the past.

If you are capturing via a capture card, try capturing to ProRes. Those files will be a lot smaller than uncompressed 10bit HD, and you’ll be working in a format that you could, if you wished, use as your online format. If you need the added quality of uncompressed for finishing then you can re-capture to that after your offline. If that’s the route you plan to go, then look up Media Manager in the FCP manual and on this forum.

Color is a lot better and includes a filter for reducing grain. That said, you shouldn’t be getting noise when you use the 3way CC unless you are making huge changes or using grainy footage to begin with. How was it captured?

Preference Manager is completely free. The cool thing about it is it can be used to back up and restore preferences for all of the Final Cut Studio software, not just FCP. I’ve also just seen that it’ll do the job of trashing preferences for you as well, which saves having to find them in Finder as I mentioned in the last post. Trashing FCP preferences only effects FCP, so all your music, project files etc are fine.
