Will FCP X really use all that RAM for 4K? I am trying to figure out the least expensive configuration that will have no problem with basic 4K editing. (don’t mean to hijack your thread, by the way! but since Noah started it…)

I was about to buy the new Mac Pro (because I want easy 4K editing, USB 3.0 and I can still get decent money for my 2011 Mac Pro) but now I can have a new editing machine PLUS a 5K screen for a decent price.
I shoot with an EX3, GH4 and will probably upgrade my EX3 to a Sony FS7.

Will the new iMac be more than enough for editing in FCP X or should I go the Mac Pro route? I’m a doc and stock filmer and do basic (corporate) films and assignments. No crazy effects or heavy filtering for me…

Thanks, Jason, but that was the first thing I tried and it never worked.
It does work when I drag ‘settings’ but not with ‘destination’… I have tried dragging it underneath the destination/settings box but then it creates a second destination/settings box underneath…

It should work the way you describe it and it is the most logical, but it never did and it doesn’t…

Update, just after I read your response, Neil: just got a call from the filmer who said his cameraman just told him he shot 4:3 letterbox. So you are right.
I imported it into a (new) dv pal anamorphic (easy setup) project. It looks squished, I uncheck the anamorphic and it looks good (with ‘normal’ black bars top/bottom) When I drop the file into the timeline it asks to change the sequence setting to match clip settings. (when I check the sequence settings, ‘anamorphic’ is unchecked…?) When I check anamorphic in the sequence settings, the image squishes again. So the footage should be anamorphic but not the timeline… strange…

I also get confused because of the black bars top and bottom. My HD projects have grey bars top bottom in the viewer window (which, of course, is normal) Why are the grey bars suddenly black in DV? (and does it matter??!)

Knowing this, what is the best advice I can give my colleague?

Thanks, Neil, I wish you nailed it but I created an entirely new project using the PAL DV Anamorphic Easy Setup, recapturing 20 seconds or so… and I got rid of the sidebars, but not the top bars…

Thanks, Rafael. For now it works just dragging them into FCP. I just don’t understand why XDXCAM Transfer doesn’t work the same as with HD. It’s the same folder structure…

Thanks, Rafael, I just dragged the AVI files into FCP and that’s just as you said. But what’s the proper procedure for getting XDCAM DVCAM into FCP7??!!
