  • I did a search on the Avid forums using this text, “HDV deck BR-HD50U”.

It turned up interesting comments. At this point, I’d say contact JVC, and post this on the Avid-L2, and the Avid Forums.

    You were told correctly.

Avid Free cannot open an what it’s version doesn’t capture. I still have Avid Free on laptop thinking that same thought months ago. It doesn’t work.

What would be great is if Avid setup an embedded plug in for web browsers, so we could build our own web-based software for intranets to view Avid media.

May 3, 2006 at 2:14 pm in reply to: Avid XPress vs. the new Media Composer

Avid announced Both Xpress Pro HD 5.5 and Media Composer 2.5, both of which are in parity between Mac and PC. They are completely caught up with these two new releases.

My comment regarding everyone should switch to FCP is simple. Most want to switch almost entirely for two reasons.

    1. Everyone else is doing it.
    2. You can add a Kona card.

The big feature you miss if you switch is Avid’s Media Management, which is far and away the best out there. Perhaps it’s not as sexy as a Kona card, but it’s quickly the first feature you are likely to miss, and miss the most.

FCP has a lot of bang for the buck. I give it that. No question there. But Avid is still a great editor. I would love it if it could attach to those low cost cards. No question about that. But I wouldn’t trade that new Media Composer for an FCP setup. You pay a little more, true enough. But if I had to figure out why my FCP sequence got corrupted, or my cuts got shifted, I’d throw the computer through a Window.

I am not saying Avid doesn’t have bugs. But in my humble opinion, I have seen less timeline issues with Avid than with FCP.

Just one person’s point of view, but since you just switched to FCP, see what you really think after a few years. I used it since 1999.

In this special program, what are the capture setting set to? Whatever they are, you might try setting them to 720 x 480 Lower Field First. Export that as DV, and bring that into AE, then Avid.

What I do is I send the timeline to an MPEG2 compression application. From there, I author a simple DVD. Granted your way is faster, but it is only faster if it works the first time.

    Check out this low-cost encoder:

If you combine this with something like ReelDVD or DVDit, you can create a simple DVD, very quickly, and your skipping troubles should go away. So long as you keep the bit-rates reasonable. Say around 7.5 Mb.
