October 21, 2005 at 9:38 pm in reply to: media start & end offset on digitized clips[jbrad2] “You’re right, it wasn’t in 4.5. In 5.0 fcp has put in a frame offset option in the system setup”
I don’t think this is the case, the above offset is to compensate the latency of devices like the AJA IO. For PCI devices like the Kona2 the value 0 (zero) gives you the perfect timing between the canvas and the actual video output.
The other offset present in FCP is and is the “capture offset” in the Capture Preset window. The value set here allows you when digitizing to perfectly match the timecode in order to compensate for the delay of the digitizer hardware. Kona2 has (if I remember well) a latency of 2,5 frames (PAL).
I underline that the problem I am experiencing is that the actual digitized media of each clip starts 5 frame later after with respect to the time set in the logged clip and ends 5 frame later. The fact that I am missimg 5 frames at the start of the clip is the opposite to the concept of an handle.
To be honest I think this is a Final Cut Pro bug.

[Walter Biscardi] “From what I understand, just choose an HDV preset and then change the Audio / Video Playback to the Kona 2. Kona 2 does support HDV playback.”
That’s right, I have tested it and it’s quite impressive.
Two things worth mention:– You don’t need to “conform” as it happens when you need to print to tape back to the HDV recording device and that’s a huge time saving. By the way you must be careful if you use RT effects as the quality can degrade a little even if you stay in SafeRT.
– I wasn’t able to perform an Edit to Tape through the Kona , FCP says that it can initialize the deck, and actually there is not a deck if you disconnect the HDV device. Unfortunately the capture setup is locked, so you can’t modify to adapt it to work with the Kona.
Still working to find a solution, any suggestion is welcome…Alessandro (Milan, Italy)

[Shane Ross] “https://www.thedvshow.com/”
The link has a refererence to an article that compares FCP to Avid from 2002! Well outdated since lacks all the major improvements that Apple has made in the last 3 years such as multicamera editing and mutliple audio track import.

[Pat King] “Thanks Allessandro – it would be nice if qt7 for windows made the gamma correction, but how would it know to do so? Anyone know wether it does?”
Encode a small sample and play it on both a Win and Mac machine, possibly two laptops to be able to do a side by side comparison.
Apart from minor differences due to sceen calibration, you should be able to easily detect major gamma issues. It’s just that easy 😉

[Pat King] “Can I somehow nest the sequence into another sequence and then apply one filter to the entire sequence?”
Sure! Simply open a new sequence, drag the edited sequence directly from the browser into the timeline, then apply the gamma correction to the nested sequence. This trick is also very useful when applying the Broadcast Safe to a complete edited sequence.
BTW, are you sure QT for Win doesn’t take care of the appropriate gamma correction on the playback side ?

[Robert Conti] “I’m specifically wondering if anyone has more info about when Sony’s XDCam products (and their use of the MXF wrapper) will be supported under OSX and FCP in file access mode.”
Robert,
have you tried Telestream’s MXF Import module? It should have file access with XDCam, unfortunately it seems a “partial retrieve” feature is not available for the moment with tape based IMX transports.
I would like to hear someone else’s experience on this matter.Ale.

[Tae] “In FCP’s defense, it is perfectly CAPABLE of keyboard operation, but for some reason, people want to use the mouse for everything, which is amazingly inefficient.”
If only people read Final Cut Pro User’s Manual!
FCP keyboard has *hundreds* of shortcuts that allows users to access literally every function – thanks to modifier keys, not to mention that a lot of FCP actions/features can be accessed directly in the timeline.
My editors say they couldn’t be faster; I think this is a trustworthy comment since they just switched from Symphony. My 2 cents.
