From what I understand, just choose an HDV preset and then change the Audio / Video Playback to the Kona 2. Kona 2 does support HDV playback.

[David Battistella] “Is there an KONA 2 preset for HDV timelines. HAve they implemented HDV playback through the KONA 2 yet?”

Nope just use the Stock HDV easy setup settings and then set only the external monitor use the to the K2’s external preview to 1080i 29.97 (or 1080i25) – I do it all the time

IF you only have an SD monitor you can set the output to NTSC or PAL so you can preview on via down-convert.

    Duh?

Thanks Guys. It does have to be the 29.97 (8-BIT) output.

That’s right, I have tested it and it’s quite impressive.
    Two things worth mention:

    – You don’t need to “conform” as it happens when you need to print to tape back to the HDV recording device and that’s a huge time saving. By the way you must be careful if you use RT effects as the quality can degrade a little even if you stay in SafeRT.
    – I wasn’t able to perform an Edit to Tape through the Kona , FCP says that it can initialize the deck, and actually there is not a deck if you disconnect the HDV device. Unfortunately the capture setup is locked, so you can’t modify to adapt it to work with the Kona.
Still working to find a solution, any suggestion is welcome…

Sure you can modify it. Just double click the setup and FCP will tell you that the setup is locked and a duplicate will be created which you can modify.

Not sure what you mean here. You couldn’t get deck control? Kona only offers RS-422 Control so if you only have Firewire control, that won’t be controlled by Kona. If it’s RS-422 control, ensure it’s the correct protocol for your particular deck, probably 29.97 Sony.

    Allesandro,

If you want to do an edit to tape back o the HDV deck then just switch to an HDV easy setup and output the timeline via the firewire stream. If you are editing to tape using any other format, HDCAM, DIGIBETA (downconverted) or other tape based formats like BETA SP, youcan do this via the KONA using rs-422 deck control as walter sttaes.

I do not think that there is a HDV deck that takes HD-SDI I/O yet so the best way to get it back to HDV tape is to go via the firewire stream bypassing the KONA 2. In your workflow the KONA 2 is meant for monitoring, the INPUT and OTPUT happen via firewire.

    Ciao Italia!
