Yes, you may use an analogue DA to distribute both blackburst and tri-level sync.

  • BMD has a user forum, I think you should post your question there rather than here, as it seems this section has more or less “died” after their user forum went online.

Well the project has been delayed, I don’t know how many times, but we’re looking at getting started early next year. I still have not sorted out exactly how I’ll go about this, but I could always give you some advice based on previous experience.

    1. Get a rack that is deeper than you need. You’ll be thankful when you see how much space cable management takes. Also get more rack units than you need, And fill the empty room with blanking panels.

    2. Buy some of those cable lacing bars similar to this: https://www.middleatlantic.com/images/iracacc/lacep.jpg Will definitely help with the vertical cable management.

    3. It’s pretty obvious, but I’ll say it anyway. Mark all cables with numbers and/or letters. I use a system where the two first numbers are the device numbers, and the two second numbers is the output number or whatever. For instance, you have a HyperDeck Studio that is device no. 11, then your first SDI out will be no. 1101. There are many ways to do this, this is just how I do it.

    4. Make exact length calculations so you avoid cable loops in the bottom of the rack or outside of the rack, if possible. Don’t make it too tight, though. Let there be a couple of extra inches just in case you should need to install new equipment later on. I/O placement differ on different equipment.

    5. Plan the power management. You should have one PDU strip at both sides of the rack, as equipment vendors can’t agree whether to place the power on the left or the right side. It’s a pain in the arse. Avoid those big consumer-ish power adapters that takes the space of two or three outlets on the PDU.

    6. Plan equipment placement in the rack carefully.

  • On second thought… For field-streaming, you should look into LiveU or Streambox. Digigram is really more for installation purposes or at least not in the field.

  • There are several different IP contribution units that you could use. The Digigram AQORD *LINK would be perfect for this. Where are you located?

If you want to have several cameras without a local vision mixer and operator controlling the mixer, you could look into Riedel’s MediorNet solutions.

There’s a Windows program called WireCAD that is supposed to be perfect for this kind of work. They have a free version with some limitations, go ahead and try it. My personal experience is that it crashes way too much.

Personally I use Adobe Illustrator. Yes, it is extremely cumbersome, but it does work with the small volume of system design I do. Would love to use WireCAD, but like I said, it just feels very buggy and it crashes a lot, and I just will not let myself spend $1300 on software that does not work.

You’d have to feed the signal from the Teradek cube decoder to the TV. If your TV does not have SDI in, I reckon you can purchase a HDMI decoder.

HDCP is copy protection. As long as the source signal is not copy protected, the HyperDeck will be able to record it just fine.

If your tuner or whatever sends the HDMI signal does not use HDCP, it should work just fine.

[Bob Zelin] “4) A tally kit, to use with ATEM Tally and GPI box – LED lights in a box with connectors, and a power supply, with an easy mate 25pin connector to the Tally and GPI box”

I completely agree! This would have been GREAT!

[Bob Zelin] “6) a real 2 channel intercom system. I just priced out a bare bones 10 station Clear Com system with 2 IFB and it is $10,000 !!! So now, between Blackmagic and Behringer, I can build a wonderful inexpensive control room, and the intercom costs more than everything combined. And no, an iPhone earpiece will not cut it. “

If you only need two channels, then check out the axxent intercom system: https://www.axxent.de/english/intercom_ms-200.html
These are inexpensive but great quality – I have deployed them into several low-budget studios, and also use it for mobile production. Sound quality is superb, and it just works! The two-channel master station is about $2500 if I recall correctly, and the beltpacks are just about $150 each. It uses industry standard 4-pin XLR headsets, and 3-pin XLR between master station and beltpacks. They can also be daisy-chained.

[Richard Crowley] “I’m waiting for the price of the converter boxes to come down to something “reasonable” (IMHO). It seems really odd to me that they charge as much for a simple converter box as they do for something like the HyperDeck Shuttle, for example. Either one is under-priced or the other is over-priced.”

Huh? Which converter boxes are you talking about? BMD’s mini and OpenGear converters are the cheapest there is, at least from what I can find. Far more inexpensive than AJA, for instance.

    ——

Also, I would quite like some modifications on the camera converters. I want 4-pin XLR for intercom headset, instead of a consumer-grade mini-jack. I would also like to see a camera converter unit with Neutrik opticalCON connectors instead of regular LC connectors. This would better allow for use in mobile production, as opticalCON cables are more suited to those applications, as are the opticalCON connectors, which locks in place.

Since BMD has entered the camera market, I would love for them to revolutionise the studio camera market as well. Inexpensive studio cameras with the possibility of controlling image settings either via an optional RCP or using a computer with some appropriate software. I am convinced that they could make a HUGE impact on this market if they released something like this.

As for OpenGear converters, I would like to see analog VDA’s and analog to digital audio and vice versa.

The VideoHub family needs salvos, the possibility to inhibit certain routes, also I would like a bigger XY-style control panel with an LCD display for physical control, something like the old Pro-Bel 6276 panels. The Smart Control panels are great for under monitors etc, but does not quite do it as a master panel.
