Phil, what graphic card are you using, how much ram does your system have, how many monitors hooked up to that graphic card, and what kind of clips in the workflow? (i.e. lots of fx, multiple camera types, etc.
I have some ideas on Sony’s instability, but need more data samples before feeling my guess is correct.

To all on this thread, you might have seen (I hadn’t) that there is a Facebook page for asking Apple to produce more newer MacPros. Lots of discussion on the Apple Forums here on Cow. Also, Larry Jordan has an article about the subject on his blog at

Companies like MSFT, HP, and others routinely share advance information with their business clients. They understand that these companies have budget cycles, and that they need to make plans sometimes years in advance. While some of us might not like those companies products, that is the way the “world” works for business planning. The lack of advance planning by Apple is only to their detriment. It’s good to remember that Apple still has barely 10% of the market, as a stockholder of theirs, I personally feel they need to get with the plan. At this rate, I for one, have already made the choice to not buy another Mac for video editing. With some advance notification from Apple on these matters, I might be willing to be wooed back to the platform. I do use a Mac laptop for my email, etc. So I’m not anti-Apple.

Did you have to go to a proxy to get it to edit this stuff? I only ask because when I do mulitcam on Pr I use the original footage with no time spent creating proxies. Or did I misunderstand your post?
Glad to hear that X is handling this stuff well. And yes, I agree that managing the clip names is difficult, especially when you get six months in with many shoots.

Jim, I don’t know if Pr is more stable on the Mac or Windows. I have a similar machine to yours, and a Win7 machine. I haven’t noticed stability issues with 5.5 on either platform. But I did not upgrade to Lion on my Mac Pro. Pr 6.0 has been more problematic, but it’s a pretty new version, with lots of new features, so I expect problems. The changes to Lion have seemed to be more at the core from what I’ve read, than Adobe’s products. Apple doesn’t seem to do a great job of giving advance info to their ISVs.
As far as OS brands go, I’m pretty agnostic. The OS is, after all, only a tool to host a job, like a hammer to a carpenter, or more to the point, like the shop where the hammer lives. I have used Macs since they came out, as well as DOS, CP/M, Linux, etc. I don’t get worked up over it, other than I hate to throw money away on tools that are about to become obsolete. The Mac OS is a great OS, but I think that many of us are very concerned with Apple’s way of approaching us, their customers and VARs (like you), over the last two years, especially the cavalier way they handled FCP to FCPX. And you are right, we need a faster turn of product on MacPros to stop the abandonment of the professional platform. The only thing that might slow it, is if Windows 8 is a disaster. I often run Windows7 for a month at a time without rebooting.
I was very happily using FCP 7 having spent thousands to buy into Apple’s vision, and then to have that happen was just like many of the software fiasco’s of days gone by (remember Dbase and the Ashton Tate lines? How about Lotus 123?). I run from that situation as soon as I smell it coming. I feel that Adobe is built for professionals, since that is their market. They aren’t going to screw their only market. I’ve decided after last June to buy into that vision, since I use AE, Photoshop and Lightroom already. Apple is a consumer company, has been and continues to be. They used FCP to sell high end Macs. Now, I’m not sure if that strategy is still in their plans. It’s a very small segment of their market.
Wring as much as you can out of your OS investment. Spend some time working on Windows 7 if you feel like it. Adobe makes it pretty painless to switch. There’s nothing ‘wrong’ with OSX, just the decisions that Apple management make at times. Now go enjoy the weekend. (G).

I don’t understand Jim’s request. Apple’s web page shows three models. You can spend $5k if you want the OS and 12 core. Apple seems to have a wide range of machines. If I could get my projects over to Adobe without major rework (which has not been the case) I’d be glad to sell my Mac Pro to move everything to my much cheaper and much faster Dell workstation. I’ve not had the problems that Jim mentions on Windows. But everyone is different. Windows has taken a long time to get to a relatively stable platform for video production. I would not have been on it during XP for example, nor Vista. But 7 has been great.
Anyway, to all who want a new Mac Pro, the best way to get one is to buy today’s machines, so Apple won’t think that it’s a dead end, which I assume they do, because of the lack of change in the model lines.
If FCP 7 didn’t fit Apples idea of professional video editing, and they chose to purposely go into the fiasco of X, then they have even less reason to think that the MP has a future in their product line. And if they kill that, Jim, it’s likely that the exodus to Windows will continue full bore.

It looks to me that they shot flat and by window light on a cloudy day. My guess is that they did not use artifical light but may have had a reflector for fill.probably was simple. Desaturate your footage. It could also be a ‘bullets’ effect used at just a touch.

Nope. I had to throw it out. The good news is that I replaced it with a Marantz PM661. A much better unit all the way around.

I think, given that, I am going to make a point of making a restore point in Windows at each upgrade. I always worry about any changes destabilizing a system that is in production.
