I’m working on a big Q3/Q4 library. What I had for Q3 I wasn’t entirely happy with, so I’m revising. Sorry this is taking so long.

January 13, 2015 at 4:26 pm in reply to: Cannot combine/ create emitters

Ashley — are you on Windows or Mac? On Mac there isn’t a way to drag particle types from one emitter to another, but I thought that it was possible in the Windows version. It would only be in the Library Manager if I remember correctly.

The reason I don’t know for certain is that this is not a very useful feature, so I never use it. The reason is that the emitter properties values scale the particle type property values, so dragging a ptype to a new emitter may give you drastically different results (those particles may look completely different in the new emitter).

Here’s an example. Say Emitter 1 had a “size” value of 500%, and Emitter 2 had a “size” value of 10%. Dragging a particle type from Emitter 2 to Emitter 1 would result in the particles being 50x larger in the new emitter. Same goes for velocity, life, visibility, tint, etc.

I can’t think of a workaround for this, although in some limited cases you can use “Make Super Emitter” and “Add to Super Emitter” to combine emitters.

Bob — yes, I’ve been pecking away at these, but we’re nearing release on Sapphire 8 so that’s been dominating my time recently. Sometimes I spend an hour working on emitters and end up with nothing that I feel is worth releasing, so it’s been taking me longer than expected. My schedule opens up after this week, so I expect you’ll be getting both the Q3 and Q4 libraries in quick succession. Sorry about the delay!

  • The pixel aspect information stored in the image files is wrong, so the viewer program you’re using is stretching it — at least that’s what I think is happening.

Either set your viewer to ignore pixel aspect ratio (always use square pixels) or try saving in a different image format in pI.

October 3, 2014 at 6:42 pm in reply to: Questions not being answered

I apologize for not replying, but the truth is I don’t have any good answers.

    1. Application updates are very difficult to make right now. I no longer do development and we don’t have any available engineers for this. At some point we will look into it, but I don’t know when that will be.

    2. The catalog has now been updated.

    3. They changed the “libraries” that are used in building pI3, not the way that Windows itself works. So the code that created those previews no longer works. There may be another way to get them working again, but see #1 above.

The only official way to communicate with GenArts is to email support at genarts dot com. This forum is not the best way to reach us (as you’ve noticed). If you emailed support and got no reply, I want to know about that. We’ve got a very responsive, highly-regarded support team.

(And in case you’re wondering, I’m working on the Q3 emitters, but I’m a bit rusty so it’s taking longer than expected)

  • You can’t. There is no connection between the pView and pI applications.

August 12, 2014 at 2:58 pm in reply to: Particle Illusions 3.09 has no emitter preview

It was a change in Windows that broke this function. It’s possible it could come back, but I worked on it back then (when Win 7 was new) and I couldn’t figure out how to make it work. (I’m simplifying of course)

You mean in the “file open” dialogs for projects and emitter libraries? If so, I’m sorry to say that no fix is coming soon for that. For emitter libraries, the workaround is to use the library manager and load libraries from there. Sorry.
