If the computer itself is producing an audible alarm, you may have an issue with the RAM or motherboard itself. Please open the side door of your Apple computer and consider contacting AJA Technical Support for assistance in diagnosing any red LEDs that may be illuminated within the Apple computer chassis. As of firmware version 4.0, the Ki Pro Mini adds support for encoding to Avid DNxHD via QuickTime Movie files. Your workflow, as stated in your post, references MXF files which the Ki Pro Mini does not currently support. To work with the DNxHD QuickTime Movie files generated by the Ki Pro Mini, AJA recommends using Avid’s AMA support. This information is supplied, alongside the firmware update file, in a Release Notes PDF.

AJA offers two versions of the 10.3 driver: a regular version and a version where the Macintosh Desktop Display mode is not enabled. This version is referred to as the NDD version. The AJA Release Notes PDF that comes with the driver states that if you experience any issue with the regular driver, such as described in this thread to use the NDD version instead. To remove the regular driver, simply boot the computer up while holding down the shift key and then run the AJA Uninstaller in the AJA Utilities folder found in Applications. Once uninstalled, reboot and install the NDD driver version. Both driver versions for the KONA LHi are listed here, with the NDD version listed second:

It could simply be that View>External Video is not set to All Frames.

The title of this thread is perhaps a bit inaccurate since you note in your post:
“I suspect there is an issue with the transfer at the computer, not with the KiPro.”

Since the issues don’t seem to be occurring on the Ki Pro Mini, but rather, as described in your post, when using the CompactFlash cards in an USB reader, the problematic item is quite likely the reader as you suspect. You should probably consider using another CompactFlash card reader.

In all likelihood, the issue is related to the fact that the material is a sub-frame rate and not an “over-the-wire” frame rate. 720p 23.98, 720p 24, 720p 25 and 720p 29.97 are sub-frame rates within the larger over-the-wire frame rates of 720p 50, 720p 59.94 and 720p 60. If you have configured the AJA Control Panel application for 720p 23.98, you will not produce a video output that the monitor will understand; in fact, the AJA Control Panel Format tab will indicate “Intermediate only – secondary output format must be selected” if only 720p 23.98 is selected. For 720p 23.98, you may cross convert to 1080PsF 23.98 for video monitoring. Since you don’t state which type of monitor you are using, be sure that it supports 1080PsF 23.98 if you perform a cross conversion; HDMI monitors do not support 1080PsF 23.98 for example. You should also keep in mind that any AJA Control Panel format selections and configurations should be made prior to launching Final Cut Pro X. You can find information and guidelines for using the AJA beta driver with Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3 in the FCP_X_and_AJA.pdf document that was included in the download alongside your driver installer and the operation manual for the KONA product.

It is quite likely that your footage does not have any issue. Using desktop software tools to evaluate video interlacing isn’t always the most reliable method since software applications may only display a field at a time for preview on the computer desktop. If the footage appears correct on a video CRT monitor (which natively supports interlaced material), then the footage is likely fine. Additionally, you can verify field dominance in an application such as Final Cut Pro 7 via the Edit>Item Properties>Format selection. Review what is reported in the Format tab, Field Dominance. SD NTSC should have a field dominance reported of Lower (Even) and SD PAL should have a field dominance reported of Upper (Odd).
