yep – that’s worth thinking about maybe – if you don’t mind it not being mobile – 27″ is a much much nicer editing experience than 15″ – according to the macrumors buying guide, the iMacs are due for a refresh pretty much as we speak – when they are refreshed, they will get thunderbolt – to future proof your investment, thunderbolt would be good to have.. or instead you could just buy a third party monitor for the laptop later – the 24 inch ones are pretty cheap.

  • Nah – I am lately strongly inclined to agree with chris kenny on this – we are all reading the sum of all fears into this announcement – I still am, periodically. Apple had begun a process of previews with iOS and the like – I think they decided to take the stage at the meet and hoover up a good harvest of coverage – god knows that job was done.

what I don’t think they fully realised was how much everyone would react. or .. perhaps they did. Either way – 8-10 weeks and we see the full software.
unlike iOS sadly.. there’s no developer pack to pore over, and the beta testers are wearing shades and a cap…

  • I have had multiple iterations of freaking out about the filmstrip –

that being said – as an accompaniment/more likely use alternative/ to an invoked clip viewer (which I now pretty firmly believe it is) – its very interesting. in the use case scenario they showed, i found it highly seductive for quickly analysing and tagging ranges, perhaps not with with dense IV… but I honestly got a bit of a thrill up my leg, to quote chris mathews. it felt truly fast, the film strip did.

I could see myself quite enjoying that new joystick – a lot. People have made comparisons to discreet logic flame smoke methodology in the case of the filmstrip, and in conjunction with apple’s lift from *edit to view sequence options – i really do think its apparent apple have been having multiple brain-fest sessions here. They’re going for the total win. They’re trying to win the game.

I will only say this – cast your minds eye to the potential interface fully extended to a 27″ inch monitor, or across two monitors:
    I. am. beyond. curious. about the kinds of options I have. It’s using 4/8 cores say, 8/16 gigs of ram, (that’s a desktop or a laptop) it’s continuously rendering – and exists as a full 32 bit float space. It really is no small beans this.

yeah. what you’re saying does ring very psychologically true alright. This is a *bit* of a perception thing.

but hey! there could be a manual wikileak. A bradley manning in the bowels of the development team…

Well sure: I was in professional contact with real world professionals *only today* in a place called AKQA cutting a sports thing for them – they’ve just invested heavily in about 30TB more xsan and a stack of new seats – believe me, they are extremely curious to know what’s happening to the roadmap.
Then say there’s Hogarth – they’ve entered the Soho market as an FCP pure play pitch – they’re probably pretty curious too. Then there’s Unit in soho, who actually cut a lot of Apple’s European ad versions – again pure FCP play, hooked up to audiopost suites and colour grading suites – they are very curious about what is going on, in terms of interoperability with other systems and…
they’e all going to be sitting on their hands for two and half months wondering if their work flow still works.

this isn’t about freaking out on twitter – I think apple have a professional onus to clear up some of the questions outstanding from the event.

no absolutely – I completely go with the long term build up to this – that’s all cool – basically there are five or six things the industry would love to know arising from that sneak peek – there are post facilities who badly need to know what is going on. I just basically think apple could have someone write a blog entry to dampen the fevered mood – with a few bullet points on the status of features like the clip viewer XML etc. It wouldn’t kill them – but I rather think they won’t – they’ll just let the industry stew for two and a half months. that’s my issue.

and yesss.. I may indeed be torturing myself, but well, I’m really not the only one, and apple have a simple solution at hand – the keyboard.

am I mad or do red camera rushes represent themselves as virtual tapes in the metadata, with TC? does anyone know if say, FCP offline to scratch conforming R3D is an EDL affair?

nah – they’ve got me, I really can sort of see my future editor in that software, I’m going to sit down and eat the manual – I just think they could comport themselves better as a professional company with professional clients.

  • nah – fair enough he’s on an NDA – and I really do think apple have cats to pull out of bags – i have faith – but it’s just that they’re pushing everyone so hard to the cliff for a mystery reveal.. it feels a little wrong.

We’re not going to tear into the packaging and pull out a slim slab -we’re just going to try and go to work with it.
