the application is like the kind of OCD, I make lists everyday, tagging everything organisational app you see all over the appstore.
OCD asbergers people love that kind of stuff. OCD asbergers people devised the organisational restructuring of this app. OCD asbergers types spend their whole lives talking about their OCD asbergers tagging schemes. This application would have me tagging my toes – I know – I can just drag to an existing tag – that’s a bit like a bin, but this godawful app has me popping up that tag dialog box an awful lot. It is word driven

well, you’re right there Bill – I’m fiercely concerned with how software *FUNCTIONS,* hey, you know, I’m using it – and I could not give two flying hoots how the code looks.

I like photoshop, I’m extremely proficient in photoshop and a bunch of other software. I don’t recall trawling through the C+ code of photoshop or whatever to gain insights into the efficacy of it as a design and photography tool. That idea is ridiculous.

In short your argument that I cannot criticise FCPX as an editing tool because I can’t “..have the slightest clue about the code that underlies it.. ” makes no sense at all.

And who’s the hunter woods thing? Too gnomic for me that one.

all interesting stuff – but borrowing the desktop publishing comparison below – its clear that the market for skilled print design, typography, layout, photography has exploded with the advent of desktop publishing which is, say, analogous to the democratisation of tools you’re describing in editing – again I’d argue that places where it really is on the ground is in broadcast journalism where in all Irish news operations about every journalist is self editing the basic three minute packages. Anything more complex, pro-editors are crafting it.

but going back to tool availability, I’m not sure pianos or quarkxpress are quite on the money, but even if so, people playing the piano can play it on elevators, in ad breaks, in website banners and on royalty free collections now – its very unlikely that some plebian horde of moron cutters shifting magnetic clips around is going to rise up and devour us – they are the pagemakers – thats all fine – if the pool gets immeasurably bigger as it did in desktop publishing, all to the wonderful good. Skill never goes out of style. Neither does the propensity to pay for it.

FCPX, however, is a still a horrible, gaudy dog’s breakfast as software.

at this point for me it’s a total idiotic mess. I’ve been noodling with it for a while now. Its just a complete mess. I really hate the way I interact with the timeline as well, its sluggish, imprecise, over animated.

Apple have completely destroyed the application for stupid, greedy, strategic reasons. It was poorly thought out, lousily implemented, stupidly rolled out, mess, mess, mess.

well, there’s still a built in lag on roll out – we’ll know better in eighteen months. this thing is a total mess – the application, the execution, the PR, everything. This is just a shambles – antennagate really wasn’t and also the product was ridiculously strong.

FCPX is a mess – the question would be is it a one off, or does it indicate intellectual and structural rot inside apple. Ultimately I don’t believe there is an apple without Jobs, and he’s not really there anymore, not in the way that he was during the last decade where he drove the entire company by will.

The last ten years was camelot. Apple isn’t built to last – its a single man’s vision. That can’t outlast the man. I would wager heavily that Apple will have stumbled repeatedly and faded completely by the end of this decade.

apple aren’t in their health anymore. It sounds weird to say this, everything seems like fire of the gods, but jobs is drifting away, and apple simply *is* Jobs.
His absence break after john scully definitively proves it. Without him there is not a company known as Apple. Jobs looked at the touchscreen tests and simply said – ‘this can be a phone’.
That’s gone. that was the last jobs insight.
Tim Cook is a manager, phil schiller is phil schiller, and Jony Ives is running out of braun. apple is running out of steam. Once Steve Jobs disengages we’re going to see a very weird repeat of the middle management clawing its way to the top and realising that there’s nothing there – there is only the room where Steve Jobs used to be.

There’s nothing to fix here, they’ve completely wrecked their editing application for stupid reasons applying models they thought were sound, about nuking and expanding the software market.

they were wrong. the market sector they have defined is a smoking mess – granted we have the likes of chris kenny answering every email ever written telling us all that we have fantastical clip database linked local relationships in three dimensions unconstrained by moronic linear tracks that go from left to right, because who ever needed that…

But still – FCPX is a godawful mess.
