Sorry just read that properly – it… Really wasn’t a good choice, I made like, a truly horrible decision, I’m sure the blackmagics are fine now but the, I think it was like decklink extreme? In 2006 they were really bad at coping with overheating in 1U enclosures with matrix panels and the like bumped up against them, they would randomly shut down. I think I picked them because I thought the black magic codec was better or something. I totally suck with third party hardware basically.
As for FCPX – I would say that less than one in a hundred people who ultimately buy that software will be concerned with SDI video capture. Blackmagic will certainly play along for a bit, but I’d say the third party hardware ecosystem for FCPX is going to wither pretty dramatically relative to FCS.

Well, that lot sounds like really useful info for general consumption.
I don’t.. think every FCP7 suite in London is going to explode tomorrow, but I just kind of presume clients are going to start putting Premiere in the brief spec inside six months..

Nothing John – de nada. I haven’t even bought or installed shagging premiere yet. Although I have been looking at whacks of tutorials and articles. And, full disclosure, I haven’t actually ingested footage over SDI in like, a year and a half. Mostly I just get handed video assets these days, or bits of campaigns for sizzle reels. 9/10 times I’m in someones facility to edit. I just want premiere’s timeline.
That said.. I did spec all the black magic cards for Aljazeera English for creative at launch. Like 20 odd seats. And I got it totally wrong – they had an incredible tendency to overheat and shut down in the 1U enclosures. All the engineers hated me. I said hello, they said ‘Kona’. Well there’s always the “people you meet on the way up” thing. Apple are at their zenith, Steve jobs is going to go pretty soon, and he is that company, he examines every product down to the screws. Asking to find a replacement is like asking to find a replacement for an asbergers John lennon type. There’s only one Steve Jobs. He completely rebuilt that company in his own image using his own next software. Given the kind of monomaniacal places he has taken the company both times, I think it’s inevitable they will decline after him. It’ll be like a really bad increasing hangover.
And when things do go awry, which they will at some point, there will be no pro backbone, there will be no pro software base, there will be no pro machines. I think the OS is already starting to look.. Somewhat stupid. Mission control is a ludicrous mess. Software like iPhoto is unusable in single window mode (according to a revealing review). He’s going to go, and then they’re going to stumble around in a half touch desktop, and at some point they’re going to make a critical error – they’re going to try to move the consumer market in some bold way like they think steve jobs would, like they tried to move us – with a gun of sorts to their head.
Some time in the next ten years apple are going to mess up really badly and when they do, I am going to crack a beer and laugh like a drain. I am on notice waiting for that narcissistic, self aggrandizing, self obsessed company to fail. Oh man – narcissistic, calling apple narcissistic feels great. IMHO They shouldn’t be in charge of any significant market share, pro editing or anything else. The only thing that used to keep apple sane is that they were tiny. And hey, you know what they say – all significant scale corporations, incorporated as citizens as they are, when examined psychologically – are sociopathic.
That’s completely lacking empathy for the plight of others to you and me.

well its probably just a photoshop error – but the position of the playback controls – and also the video, even blown up, is taking up way too much of the GUI – that’s a two up view alright.

I’d argue that’s a bit of a generous statement. Personally, I find it to be a pretty insane colour board. and there’s no direct numerical entry, and no awareness of the scroll wheel for numerical entry.
I suppose once Colourista II is re-encoded, then everyone is good to go.. as long as the API hooks let the app sit its GUI elements into the effect controls? Alex Lindsay expressed some doubt about what would be allowed go in there.http://www.ogallchoir.net

yeah no worries – I’ve said it like four times on the list there… eh.
And god please don’t mention touch based FCP. at that rate the software is going to have an optional finding nemo theme, where actual fish float behind the clips and occasionally nibble the edges of them.
