[Paul Dickin] “or a forthcoming coloursync-managed Apple television set.”

that’s an interesting thought tho – someone said ages ago that FCPX may represent an initial marker for Apple’s broader ambitions in terms of media delivery to the customer – and what that media might actually be? there was some crazy talk of Apple fashioning just in time assembly of media objects at the set terminus… they’ll need something to differentiate the television people say they’re working on – were FCPX to become important in the assembly and delivery of new media objects appropriate for apple’s content delivery systems, then maybe that would have an impact?

I still basically do think it’s an Edsel tho.

  • Craig Seeman – “Jobs was not hands on on the micromanagement level.”

I don’t think thats right. remember the story about him ringing up vic gundothra on a sunday about the shade of yellow in the google logo as it appeared in the iphone app?

Jobs was manically focused on the craziest small details of everything. I think that was part of his force of will – you never knew where he would land. There was another quote recently where someone said that everyone was always preparing to pitch to steve, preparing their boss to pitch to steve, or preparing their bosses boss to pitch to steve. He constructed a pretty flat hierarchy that left him exposed to nearly all decision making.

even in the case of the thing FCPX you can bet there were completely gruelling demo presentations to jobs, where he would presumably crucify them over a drop shadow, or the operation of the precision editor, as is his wont. What he saw in the end satisfied him.
I think he really meant it when he said in the email “its going to be awesome” Steve Jobs thought it was awesome. There are editors who would disagree with him there tho.

But he thought the resulting product was awesome. And lets face it, he would have been the one to instruct them to design it for mobile at the outset. Its like that interesting point your man chioni made – its an editing app heavily favouring one handed keyboard operation. I saw a lot of heads nod at that observation. Apple had very long term goals with this app. It is certain that there are considerations made with regard to touch based operation in the future, given that the future of computing, in apple’s universe, is touch based.

And much and all as all that is actually really interesting, it hasn’t stopped FCPX turning into the Pepé le Pew of editing systems in the here and now. The degree to which FCPX is dead in broadcast, hollywood and education was palpable on that panel. As the man says: you can piss off some of the people some of the time, but you really can’t piss off all of the people all of the time.

September 2, 2011 at 2:56 am in reply to: FCPX. Not bad. Better then previous thought

apple is now making touch based mobile devices.
    right?

say cupertino isn’t thinking about editing – they aren’t and they won’t – not in six months, not in a year, not in three.

    Its done.

The whole of FCP as a thrust is a dead application. Every app that was ever around it is dead and the entire ethos underlying it is dead.
The apple that bought or generated those philosophies is dead.

FCPX was a very weird hard fought care nothing kiss off moment.

hyperbolically? …. like…. dr. manhatten below exiting – I really do think they’re gone.

there is no three year FCPX, there is no roadmap – it’s done and entirely over. we’ve had our soup.

I still think they’re playing dutch total football though.

so apple have set market revenue in the creative pickup truck hardware/software sphere, annnd they also now have mindboggling sums accruing through telecoms and mobile – iOS whatnot.
Still – I’d be the bit surprised if it’s a zero sum game with regard to their attention – that they may feel the need to amputate entire sectors of operation and profit in what is a highly fluid situation, simply in order to gain yet more focus on the emerging markets. When you look at the product role out as defined by jobs – its incredibly stately to this point. outside of the Mac/OSX behometh we only say two things in ten years; ipod and then iphone.

ok it’s three – but ipad is still a mad infant stellar system. I’m inclined to think that Apple are deeply pleased to have more gardens to tend to. they do rather seem to have the capacity. They still need to fix this shagging editing software tho.

Steve jobs – aigne luimneach an saol. Ní bheidh a leithéad arís ann.

  • In general we’re talking about Steve jobs aren’t we? The entire conception of most of what I am professionally runs through him. I started out in design like. His internalization of design, product, typography, the true virtues of design.. along side the rest of his blinding brain – l swear. It’s mad, I’m incredibly sad to see him go.

    *glomming on with own rant*

    B) FCPX will be the standard.
I’m going ranty again: I am going to be forced to learn avid. AVID

FCP really is dying like bad smelly meat my end right now – that is the crazy realisation half of London is waking up to – the whole thing is actually dying, the entire conception of FCP in production and post production – the entire shagging thing. I cannot believe apple have done this.

    C) FCPX is a better way to edit and is poised to pave the way for the next decade.

seriously – they just burned FCP alive – it was our shoemakers shoe. apple just broke tens upon of thousands of shoe maker’s shoes in front of the shoemaker’s eyes. They literally broke the entire concept of the application in half.

    C) FCPX is a better way to edit and is poised to pave the way for the next decade.

they’re just too unstable with this software move. No facility, no post production house, no broadcast entity, no one vaguely serious could ever trust them again. This software shift is way too mental. its a ludicrous mix of their amateur software ambitions and their boiled down understanding of what they think editing should be. parts of it are like scrawls on a wall. It’s just too far gone. Which is awful because i’d sooner have to get to grips with this than avid.

    C) FCPX is a better way to edit and is poised to pave the way for the next decade.

no, what they have come up with is a tagged organiser “things” app, with a rectangular colour corrector.

    C) FCPX is a better way to edit and is poised to pave the way for the next decade.

    no the timeline is awful.

    C) FCPX is a better way to edit and is poised to pave the way for the next decade.

no, the precision editor is the pirates of the Caribbean ride of editing (things move dramatically!).

    C) FCPX is a better way to edit and is poised to pave the way for the next decade.

FCPX is a horrible, confused, disrespectful, seriously poorly thought out, itunes software team sunday afternoon effort, stick a glow on that timeline mess.

[Andy Neil] “That is why I said it was hyperbole. “

    bud – come on.

“Where’s your derision for the people saying that Apple isn’t planning on adding multicam back in..?”

reference to hyperbole needs to be grounded in spoken hyperbole. You weren’t referring to hyperbole, you were making an unsubstantiated statement idealising a perfectly ridiculous statement from people you don’t agree with on this issue.

With respect, you did a good trawl after the fact to dig up supporting statements of a sort, but there is no way in which there is a held position that multicam is in question.

I would never say that craig seeman or anyone else is waving a 52 state flag in favour of this application. there are honest differences of opinion here. people arguing the problems with this app are doing just that.
I’m not saying you, but… certain people have tended to frame the dispute on this forum in passive aggressive denunciations, a failure of the forum in their eyes. And well, then maybe they go ring up the cow.. and then maybe they quote supreme court judiciary or something. (sorry – way too snarky) howandever – this forum now explicitly appears, in its title, to exist as a debate forum for the issues surrounding the decisions made by apple here. that would seem to merit all actions of debate.

    sure for kicks here’s one:

the fact that there is a fat, dripping drop shadow when i lift the clip is. a. chrome. too. FAR!!!!!!. **thumps desk**
The timeline should be a thousand fold japanese blade in its responsiveness, and god knows, I’m serious – it isn’t, and that is near unforgivable – that is actually one of my true, true bug bears: the gallons and gallons and gallons of chrome on the timeline – feeling the fractionally sluggish clip and all its subtle glows and shadows move, watching the clip filmstrip tortuously generate at high zooms drives me somewhat completely off my rocker. Apple badly need to re-discover their GUI chrome zen. The glom on this timeline is a disgrace.

Its equivalent is to click placing the marker in word and waiting a horrible fraction of a second – every single bloody time
considering the criticality of perceived timeline action in editing – their treatment of the timeline on that level is a disgrace!!!! I have slapped my glove on the table!

August 22, 2011 at 9:02 pm in reply to: 2 months later…. still nothing?

I feel inclined to stick up for his contention – as a one trick pony the 300 you shell out beats pluraleyes alone, nevermind the h264 native.

(although needing to know the matching audio master clip somewhat hobbles it in comparison to the – dump twenty 5D clips and twenty wavs in a bucket and sort it out – nature of pluraleyes. that distinction is being largely glossed over by the interested parties.)

still – for 299, you could argue that it has some very decent engine parts to be stripped out.
