I may have missed this, but can’t you break the image up into smaller pieces and then connect them together with parenting. This way AE doesn’t have to render a huge image at once.
I;m pretty tired and I may have missed the point, but if a big image was the problem, breaking it into smaller parts should fix it.

Plus in AE CS3, you can use photoshop Layer styles, such as stroke – on any layer – that means you can apply a stroke to any keyed actor. I did it today.

yes, it’s 3D in that the flat text can now be movedinto 3D space – per character – meaning each letter can be out on a seperate 3D plane.
While it still is really “2.5D” (flat objects in 3D space), it’s quite powerful.

You can create a white solid, and then use the effects CC StarBurst.
Then play with the grid spacing and size to get smaller stars further apart from eachother, and set the speed to 0, so the stars don’t move.
Personally, I think you’re better off doing it in photoshop – flamingpear.com has several cheep photoshop plug-ins for creating space: Glitterato (Starfield backgrounds with space like nebula clouds, LunarCell (for planets), and SolarCell (for sun-like objects).
Oh, and you can even turn the Lunar Cell images into spherical maps that could be used with the effect CC Sphere.

swf’s are not a good option. Audio and video lose sync after a few seconds.
Can ou rneder normally, and then convert to FLV?

Once AE CS3 is released, I hope to do a bunch of tutorials on the puppet tool, and if so, I will include that in there somewhere.
The short of it is – add some puppet points in a straight line from head to toe, and then use the wiggle expression in each puppet point. Makes the character wobble a lot – if the motion blur is on and the wiggle hefty enough it gets very blurry. Then just animate the layer’s position and/or scale as needed.

In addition to the jobs forum we have here. there are several local user groups for AE that have forums here at the cow. Just look for the Letters “UG” at the name of the forum in the list – for example, we have one called “UG: After Effects New York”. If the job is in a city that has an AE user group, you can post there as well.

Different compression codecs serve different purposes.
Some are better at keeping good motion while others are better at color. Sorenson 3 always seems a little hot on the Reds when I produce it out of squeeze (the opposite of your issue), but other than that image quality and motion is great.
Yeah – don’t use your video editor to compress video. It will always look worse and be larger than any program designed for compression. If possible, use software that has 2 or multi-pass processing as an option.
The first pass analyzes the video, and the second compresses. Much tighter compression and better quality overall.
