Stroke out of alpha
Posted by Eyal Dimant on June 13, 2007 at 6:20 pmIs the a quick way to create a stroke (or for that matter, a mask to be used by the stroke effect) based on a layers alpha channel?
Thanks

June 13, 2007 at 5:46 pmTry selecting your layer and using Auto-Trace under the Layers menu. You will have to specify the alpha channel as the source for the trace.
Then turn ‘Preview’ on and tweak the settings until you’re satisfied, I usually like to ‘Apply to new layer’ (just a habit), but it doesn’t really do any harm to apply the mask to the source layer, you can switch the mode to add/subtract/none/etc after the trace is applied.
If the alpha channel is animated then you want to select the ‘Work Area’ radio button at the top.

Plus in AE CS3, you can use photoshop Layer styles, such as stroke – on any layer – that means you can apply a stroke to any keyed actor. I did it today.
