Another way to make it look more 3D (though not what you are looking for) is to use 2 particle types to create fake shadowing, as in this tutorial:

We all make that mistake sooner or later.
On the upside, to save time, you can import your rendered quicktime to AE and just put the audio in the same comp and re-render together. it will go much faster then a stadard render.
this should only be done if you rendered uncompressed (or animation compression) – otherwise you will lose video quality from one compressed video to the next.

This is probably obvious to you, but did you check the audio checkbox at the bottom of the output module? This checkbox is required to be checked if you want to have audio output with your video.
