Sorry, there are no more “pixels” in 10 bit vs 8 bit. It’s about the depth of the color space (256 colors per channel against 1024 colors per channel). If you capture in 10 bit, you’re filling that extra bandwidth with empty information. It’s that simple.Those bits are useful, however, when you process the image for compositing, graphics, etc. And then, it’s not about the source’s bit depth (unless the source is 10 bit). If you set FCP’s rendering options to HDR processing you should get a much, much wider space than 10 bpc processing. If you set the timeline to a 10 bit codec, then you truncate less of that extra information (but HDR benefits are there also if the timeline is 8bpc). Usually the kind of thing that benefits more from this is rarely done on an editing application and more in a compositing/graphics package, where sources frequently are 10/16/32 bits (things coming from graphics, compositing or 3D packages, for instance) and are also processed at those wide color spaces. Moving a 10 bit file from those to FCP will allow you to mantain as much as possible that color information.

“8 Bit Boutique” What a great name! Can I please have it? But seriously, is there any hardware vendor selling 8 bit capture cards anymore? Certainly not Decklink, AJA or the likes.
Christopher: I’m afraid you’re probably confusing the benefits of 10 bit capture with those of 10 bit processing, which wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t for the slighly arrogant wording 🙂
For color correction, motion graphics and effects you will get a wider color space by processing in 10 bits, or even 16 bits and HDR. Like Martin said, capturing in 10 bits an 8 bit source is just a waste of space for information that simply is not there. But maybe that allows you to be a “10 bit boutique”, right? 🙂It was demonstrated with scopes that there’s no 10 bit information by capturing Beta SP with a 10 bit codec. 10 bit processing is another story. And 10 bit capture is a great idea when the source does have the extra information, like DigiBeta (it was widely discussed and technically demonstrated in the Cow that Digibeta truly is 10 bit).

This is not true for the Decklink cards, at least. You don’t even need an HD capable card. All Decklink cards can perform a software RT downconversion to their component/SDI outputs and AFAIK this works too with HDV.

You have to set scaling to 0.10 in RF’s top bar (next to where you set “Cinema 4D” as the target application).

Thanks for your reply, Brian.
The shadows just became colored when I assigned the animated texture in the Transparency channel of the material. I guess that if the transparency channel is white, it doesn’t produce colored shadow no matter how strong the transparency.
Now It works, but you know what? It probably looked better when shadows were black 🙂

God. It’s alarming how Orwellian Apple is and we the users are. Steve took 5 minutes to say Pentium is better, end of story. Any reference of the Pentium being worse will be deleted from our minds. The Pentium ALWAYS was better, PowerPC is the enemy, right?
He could have said that from now on we should wear our underwear on the outside. And we’re fine with it. Now we all think “we don’t care what the processor is”. But 72 hours ago we would have loved to explain to PC users the advantages of the PowerPC. Or would have questioned Charlie White’s benchmark results. Now we will buy Intel boxes at a premium price, but probably won’t be allowed to upgrade processors, which is the only advantage of PCs.
Users like Graeme are really independent, but certain others are obviously SO afraid of saying something Apple wouldn’t like…. why’s that?Don’t get me wrong – I won’t go Windows and Premiere. But I am alarmed at the almost complete lack of critical points of view. Please allow me the freedom of saying that, IMHO, this sucks.
I feel better now. I still prefer Mac and Apple apps.

I am not kidding you. Uwe, And I’m not a member of the DVD SP team. Please address your frustration to them, not me 🙂
I think you fail to grasp they don’t do it this way because they don’t know better. They do it this way surely because of the way DVD SP works internally (just like Motion’s monitoring capabilites are very slow for the same reason). DVD SP probably uses the AGP hardware to decode and even it performs some kind of real time muxing in the simulator. They seem to be aware of the limitations – Notice how Apple doesn’t really advertise this capability. It’s buried in the manual and late breaking news.
If it’s this or nothing, I take this. Hopefully, there will be other options in the future. But don’t expect that other option to be a Decklink, but rather a MPEG hardware board. If you consider how competent Blackmagic are for implementing these things, if it would be possible to support DVD SP with Decklink, they would have done it already.
I have no idea how you could solve the cabling problem. Mind you, DVD SP 4 is for DVD authors, and DVD Authors are not typically connected to a machine room. They are usually connected to a video monitor and deck, Digibeta, Beta SP or whatever. Still, if it’s this or nothing, I take this 🙂
As for calibrated monitors, what’s the problem? There’s a reality check that you can try.
Invite 10 video content creators you know (not video technicians, obviously) and show them both a a composite, super video and a component output of any production. Count how many of them guess it right. You’ll notice most of them will be able to easily tell apart composite from the other two, but not so many will figure out those other two. I remember that many years ago it was discussed on the AJA Kona forum how Y/C is actually a quite good connection, closer to component than it is to composite.

Nope. That feature only works when the output is provided by the AGP display card. Ironically, this means a Powerbook and even an iBook have more direct support than a G5. With a G5, you could either use the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition (not Special Edition but the 128 MB one) or get the DVI to super video cable.

Are we sure this a Decklink feature and not a FCP 5 /dynamic RT feature? What happens if you choose the generic 8 bit uncompressed easy set-up and try the same thing?
