Wayne: In my experience the FCP audio limiter works, but not just from the filter controls but in combination with an adjustment to the gain settings in the clip. Try to see if it works for you.

If you project doesn’t include actual video clips, field rendering is not required. Bear in mind that field rendering produces smoother motion, because the temporal resolution is doubled. Certain things might look less “strobe” like. Rendering takes much longer too.
If your project does include (interlaced) video clips, field rendering could be a good idea. The vital thing though is to check that field order interpretation is set correctly for impoted clips.Adolfo Rozenfeld

I don’t know if you can use Invigorator 3.0x at all with AE 6.5, and for Invigorator 4, you probably need a minor update (I guess even more for AE 7) you can dl from Zaxwerks’ zite.

Yes, the Decklink cards are great. They work on both Mac & PC. The HD versions offer both SD & HD previews. And read this: The SD ones (Decklink SP or Extreme) can send SD or downconverted HD/HDV to an SD monitor, how about that?

If you’re using a Mac, you should go to Preferences > Video Preview and enable the different preview options and set the output device to Blackmagic RGB 8 bit (PAL or NTSC).
If you’re on a PC I have no idea, because video previews work differently on the PC version. Probably some kind of Decklink plug-in is needed?Adolfo Rozenfeld

Have you checekd the advanced renderer manual’s section on VMB? I don’t think there is much more to it. Also, there a couple of sample projects on the Goodies CD.

16 bit processing will for sure reduce (or even supress) banding.
But jaggies usually have very litte to do with color depth. Depending on how strong the jaggies are (from subtle to grotesque) they could be related to: using formats with low color sampling (DV or HDV), Motion’s anti-aliasing set to a low level, graphics material badly prepared for video, field dominance issues, alpha interpretation issues, too much (or inadequate kind of) compression (HDV is a really bad idea for motion graphics), etc.
FWIW, I am using Motion most of the time in 8 bit projects and don’t have problems with jaggies (except Motion projects that import to FCP with the wrong alpha type, but that is solved in 5 seconds). So, while 16 bit processing is awesome, there has to be a less “exquisite” problem there 🙂Adolfo Rozenfeld

Motion JPEG A and B are mid 90s codecs that existed mainly because of their relationship to then existing video editing hardware. Aurora boards were using them recently, AFAIK. The PhotoJPEG codec, as found in Quicktime 6.x and later is at least of the same quality, with an even smaller data rate and its’ optimized for software playback. At about 4 MB/s it looks better than it has any right to. And yes, in many cases it’s different to tell it apart from uncompressed material. But it is true that with certain demanding stuff, the difference will make itself evident. It won’t take an engineer scared of loosing his job to notice it 🙂Still, it’s important to undertstand that most Avid sytems will surely transcode any of those into something else, so any space savings or quality advantages will be conditioned by the Avid codec your system is working with at the moment, right? I would say I have a good understanding of the different Quicktime codecs, but not that much experience with Avid, so I probably should stop talking 🙂

Most professional 3D applications today will let you create HDR environments where latitude is not limited by film or sensor latitude. They will even let you use your HDR still images as textures. How about that?

Well, AVID can understand any standard Quicktime codec on translation. Unfortunately, that translation process is absurdly painfull if the computer is not very modern (totally CPU based). I remember waiting hours for a Symphony to do that.
I believe it was version 6.5 of AE that added the ability to render to native OMF essence files. My knowledge of AVID speak is litmied, but common sense suggests those files should work on AVID without any translation needed. The OMF options are DV, 1:1 (uncompressed) and another 1:1 option for truly progressive scan footage. The standard 1:1 option should produce really “heavy” files but totally uncompressed.
