    Thanks for the reply!
So what I’m understanding is —
    1. Edit each on a different track in Premiere
    2. Then render each of them as separate files
    3. Find a certain type of player that is able to play two files simultaneously in sync to two different monitors

    Correct?

Regarding the playback of the files, I don’t have any hard/software at the moment. This will be a video piece in an art exhibition. I’m assuming I’ll be able to request whatever hardware or software is necessary, as long as it fits our budget.

    Thanks Joe.
    You’re assumptions are about right.
I’ll receive a ready video with English audio which will need to be transcribed.
The transcriptions will need to be broken down to an English “source” subtitle SRT file, including timecode in/outs for each segment.

Then the English source SRT will be sent out for translations. It is very possible that the translations will need to be later segmented differently from the English because of text expansion/reduction. For example German or French text tends to take up more space compared to English, while Japanese or Chinese usually take up less space.

Then I’ll import the translated SRT files and check, with the help of a linguist, that the subtitles are correct and timed appropriately.

Once done, I will need to render the video with each of the target language subtitles.

  • hi david, thanks for replying.
yes, i think you’re right about the save as… and the rasterizing of the smart objects to pixels. in fact, when saving to jpg, everything is pixels, i guess. but still, when viewing the resulting jpg at 100% the smart objects which were once vector art and are now pixel-based art still should look pretty much the same as the psd at 100%. but in my case, they don’t. they look much softer around the edges, obviously degraded in quality much beyond how it should be. whats more is that if i create a square shaped vector in photoshop and then place a smart object of the same sized square shape made in illustrator and then save that file as a jpg – the illustrator object will turn out blurry and the photoshop square turns out nice and sharp. by the way, all of this is true also when saving to pdf.
someone at a different forum suggested i first rasterize all my smart objects within photoshop and then save as jpg (or pdf). to tell the truth, i haven’t tried that yet. but even if that did work, it wouldn’t be a very great working method, since you can’t undo rasterizing smart objects, so no sense in doing that.
i’m sure it’s some kind of settings somewhere, maybe telling photoshop to rasterize the smart objects at a particular quality. but i can’t find where. otherwise it could just be something buggy. the funny thing is that i don’t recall ever having run into this problem before.

  • thanks for the reply. i tried the 2nd method you suggested – envelope distort > make with mesh. i DID manage to achieve what i wanted with this method, although it was a bit tricky. i was sure there would be some kind of simpler to do this… kind of like envelope distort > make with top object, which seems to reach similar results to what I was looking for but not quite. in fact, even after trying “make with top object” several times with different objects I still couldn’t quite figure out what exactly goes on with this envelope distortion.

anyway, thanks for your help! i guess the bottom line is that i managed to get what i want in the end and learned a new tool.

    thx

  • Hi Vincent, thanks for the reply.

I updated my profile with specs.

I tried unlocking layers, didn’t help. Is that really necessary? I’ve been able to export locked layers before, but I have no idea if it is something that could cause problems.

Opening the .ai file in Photoshop… well I did something similar which worked. I copy/pasted the vector art from Illustrator into Photoshop as a smart object. That worked!

So…. right now, the important thing is that I can continue working.
Yet, if you see something in my specs that could be causing this problem, I’d sure like to know anyway.

    Thanks again.

  • Got it! I’m not very used to using AI and I just figured every item in the Layers Pallet is a layer, but I understand now that there are layers and objects stacked one above the other within the layers, but they are still considered Objects and not additional layers within layers.

    Thanks for your help!

  • Thanks for your reply Les!
I DO see the layer color listed to the left of the layer name in the layers pallet, but i can’t figure out how to change it. I doubled-clicked the layer and an Options window came up where I can change the layer name, and check Show and/or Lock. That’s it. I don’t see where I can change the layer color or any additional layer settings.
    Did I miss something?
    thx
