top right on the timeline window there are 2 buttons. I bet the lefthand of these has been deselected. (It looks like a diagonal figure of 8.) I was having the exact same frustrations until i realised this last week!!

in FCP i use Genarts Sapphire plugs most, and in AE i find myself reaching for Trapcode most often.

    EDIT>>>>

i think i have found the problem….the sequence has gone and got itself set to photo jpeg instead of 10 bit uncompressed !

Ain’t it just typical that you check everything under the sun, rip out all the cables, re-install drivers and then find its a simple little little thing like that!

I usually drag from the browser into the ETT window and drop onto the Assemble overlay. I have just tried your suggestion and it makes no difference. I have also tried an insert instead of assemble and again no difference.

I have a horrible feeling a complete re-install is looming!!

if you are stretching the smaller video by 40 pixels across the x axis then you will get a blurry smeary image. Same reason if you draw on a ballon with a marker pen then inflate the balloon – the image will stretch and smear. Pixels are a finite size and edit packages rarely add new ones to make up for your stretching exercises!

I have to ask – why are you creating a new sequence in this weird size?

Have you ever dropped in a really naff shot, knowing full well the director will want to remove something just because he feels he should, only to have him love the naff shot and demand you lose something really good?

A commercial i cut recently was feeling a bit static and lifeless. We had used all the best takes but it needed more….so i started adding small scale increases (100-115%) along with very small rotational changes (-5 to +5) over the course of each shot. Edit suddenly looked much more dynamic – but no-one else could figure out what magic i had weaved!

Audio is one of my favourite places for adding tricks to carry a less than great edit. A well placed spot effect can make an empty shot feel full and vibrant.
