Just read the thread…
David, why such a huge TV? Wouldn’t the smaller 23″ (or whatever) be fine, and it would more likely easily fit into anyone’s editing station, but a huge 42″ would require a complete rearrangement of the room! 🙂
Also, we are exporting HD projects, as well as SD. We have the Kona LHi and I’m wondering if it would be wise to have both a good HD external monitor, as well as a good SD ext monitor. Obviously, so that our HD projects could be viewed on an HD monitor, and SD on SD monitor.
I have no technical or knowledgeable reason to think that, it just kind of makes sense that way in my head. Any thoughts?

Thanks again Paul.
Since we’re using P2, and since our local TV markets have pretty much all gone digital/tapeless. It sounds like you’re saying that our only use for the Kona is for viewing on an external proper monitor. Correct?
If so, seems like a sh*#load of money just to have that as an option. 🙂
ps – I watched the trailers for he’s such a girl and girls on the wall. really awesome. i noticed a few actors (begley, etc) who i know from chris guest’s (my favorite, of course) films…made me enjoy the trailer even more. 🙂
Thanks again.

Thanks guys for the responses….
Paul, you’re right in your assumption as to my current workflow. And since I am just getting into TV broadcast editing/exporting, I don’t know all the ins and outs.
I’m exporting standard def QT movs, then the stations transcode them for air. The QT movs look stinkin good on my computer (no, no external monitor, i know i need one…), but then when i see them on air, they look awful. The color is all gone, it’s really pale looking, desaturated, etc….
I’ve wondered if using the Kona to downconvert my HD footage for SD export/broadcast would help the final picture look better.
If so, is the Kona used on initial capturing of the footage from P2 to hard drive? or from hard drive to project timeline? or from timeline to final export?
If that makes sense, and if you have time, let me know your thoughts. If it doesn’t make sense, just forget it. I just need to go read a book on this!! 🙂
Thanks,
Adam

Again, thanks guys….
Jeff thanks for the link. That looks amazing and will be a huge help I’m sure.
Creatasphere has no dates for ’10 Varicamps on their site, so I emailed them….thanks though…Cheers,

Noah and Jeff, thanks, and Emre…
I don’t know what I’m going to do, or not do, moving forward….but I’ve got time to figure it out, so it’s all good.
I guess the 35mm adapter w/ a set of lenses is probably the way to go, if shallow DOF is a key goal.
I’m in Greenville, SC. Any “Intro to Varicam” type trainings around here? I’ve looked into Varicamp, but I can’t find anything current, it’s all from last year, or later.
I don’t know if this is “allowed” at the Cow, but I am looking for someone to train me in the Varicam, specifically, getting to where I need to be w/ what I do….which is shooting for local car commercials, edit in FCP, and export for Broadcast TV. Any ideas?
Thanks again,
Adam

I just had the same problem.
simple workaround: set your outpoint 2x longer than your actual timeline. then, when exporting, it will still only get “half” of your file, but since your outpoint is twice as long as your actual video, it will get exactly what you want!
i’m laughing that this even works…
hope you didn’t already pay for that software!
cheers,
Adam

John,
I don’t even know if you’ll get this considering your post was quite a while ago…
But I wondered what ever happened w/ your project. I am new to converting HD to SD, but I am trying it now. I have HD that needs to be broadcast in SD. I can keep the letterbox and add graphics and text to top and bottom, so that’s not a problem.
But I wonder why I can just do this:
Edit the piece in HD
Move the whole timeline into an SD 4×3 sequence
Export 720×480Why doesn’t that work? Will it be an issue w/ the TV Station? Or maybe it does work, but it’s just not a good way to do it (quality-wise).
Anything you learned would be great to know. 🙂
Thanks,
Adam

I’m not sure…
But make sure that, in the log and capture window, you have correct settings for the “capture settings” tab, and the other tabs also.
Second, get a deck. Using the camera for capturing is just not efficient and maybe it’s causing your woes.
Hope it works out…

I’ve had that problem also.
I’m not really sure why it happens. But it happened to me alot this summer when i was working on 2 different computers, using up to 8 different external HD’s which held all of the files. We would be switching HD’s pretty regularly, and I think that is what would make the clips become offline. Even when the correct drive was mounted, the clips would sometimes still be offline. And like you said, sometimes it wouldn’t recognize the file to reconnect, even when I am staring at it in a Finder window, FCP would still sometimes not recognize it. ?
Sorry I can’t help much, but avoid switching hard drives around unless necessary, and avoid moving files around on your HD, as that can confuse some programs and not allow them to find the file that used to be in a certain spot.
