Yikes! I would hope that with all those problems Avid or your dealer would help you out! You spent a lot of money on what sounds like a big headache. There’s nothing worse than buggy gear that gets in the way of editing. I hope things work out for you.

Thanks for all the input concerning my questions. I had a good long talk with the dealer today and spent about an hour cutting on the Adrenaline and Mojo powered machines. I’m actually starting to lean back toward the Axio since I can get some pretty robust performance with HD-SDI and uncompressed 10-bit HD, and it’s about half the price of the Adrenaline. Plus I still have all my Adobe integration.

I’ve been comparing so many numbers on so many systems that I’m about cross eyed right now, so I think I’ll sleep on this for about a week. Thanks again for all your input!

Thanks for the info guys. I want to follow up on a few things you each said but I only have a minute to send this quick note. When you say $18,000, what exactly are you talking about? I’m assuming you mean the Adrenaline hardware itself and NOT the MC software and the workstation. Is that correct? Even with the additional cost of those other components that’s cheaper than I was expecting!

“Paste Attributes” can only add things. I can’t take effects away. If you copy a clip with no effects and paste attributes to one with effects, nothing will happen.

To the best of my knowledge the only way to remove effects from several clips in one step is to go back in your undo history. Of course, that would only work if you still have the project open from when you applied the effect AND you would have to be willing to lose all other work you’ve done since then. That’s not a very good option.

The quickest way I can think of is to highlight the clip and click the arrow in the top right corner of the effects pallete and choose, “delete all effects from clip.” That is faster than highlighting each effect and hitting delete or backspace. That option only works if you want to delete all effects. If you have other effects applied that you want to keep then you’ll have to select the individual effect and delete it.

Unfortunately, it looks like no matter what you do it’s going to have to happen one clip at a time. Maybe someone else knows a trick that could help you out…?

Thanks Dave! You’re right, I shouldn’t worry so much! I guess I just have to get used to letting the software do its job! I’m too used to burning a disc that I could then pop back in and check. I expected this process to be some complicated mystery but it’s actually super simple!

The only reason I wanted to erase the DLT was because I just opened up the most recent DVD project and created a master for that as a test. I don’t actually want that project on DLT. From what you’re saying, I should be able to put the tape back in and make the master of the correct project which will write over the existing project on the tape.

If how “cool” a computer looks has anything to do with your decision to pick a computer, you should probably re-evaluate your priorities.

I can edit on both Macs and PCs…in fact, I can edit with a razor blade and Scotch tape if I have to!

This thread started off pretty funny, but now it’s turning into the same old flame about which is better. I suggest steering clear of any editor who talks more about their equipment than about their editing abilities.

It probably sounds ridiculous to spend that money on an encoder that I don’t know how to use, but yes, I do plan on doing a lot more DVD work. My business is heading that direction and this job is really the one that I’m learning on and hopefully making most of my mistakes! (Don’t tell the client!) About a month or two ago I realized how little I really know about making DVDs and I figured I better get myself caught up now before it’s too late!

So because time is tight I’ve been posting most of my questions here since you can usually get much faster responses than from tech support. I’m buying the software and hardware I think I’m going to need and hopefully I won’t be so far in the dark after a job or two.

I just bought Cinema Craft Encoder SP2 for this project so I don’t know the program very well at all. The video is set to 6000KB/S and CBR. Audio is defaulted to wav, but isn’t AC3 the best option? The only options I see are MPEG 1, Wav, and AIFF.

Like I said, this is new territory for me. Until now anything I’ve put on DVD was stuff that didn’t matter as much. On this job I want to make it look and function as well as I can.

That’s a good idea. I’ve done DVD-ROM stuff in the past with great success. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it for this application. Thank you!
