Have you tried loading the project on another computer? Even a latop – mount the drives over the network, dupe the project file, and attempt a render.

Take out the 1GB Apple ram that came in the computer. Don’t quote me, but I thought I heard the Intel macs are buggy with odd amounts of RAM or mismatched RAM.

That’s too long. On my Dual G5/2.5, I could export a 92 minute 1080p uncompressed sequence to 1pass Mpeg-2 in about 6 hours. So that would take 12 for 2 pass…

I think there’s a very significant bug with the Intel chips and Compressor.

Yeah, I saw your post on Apple.

So here’s the problem. There seems to be a specific bug with DVCPROHD/ProRes and Mpeg-2 transcoding on the Intel macs with Compressor.

One file which was 42 minutes DVCPRO-HD 720, took nearly 2 hours with Compressor (with the whole cluster thing properly set up). But then I took the same file straight into DVD Studio Pro and it was able to encode it in…. 25 freaking minutes.

    I’m just eyeballing them in.

And it’s definitely green on that plasma. I’ve checked it now against 2 CRTS and a Sony Luma HD monitor that was just factory calibrated.

Paul – this room has been cantankerous lately, sorry.

get the Kona. No questions asked.

We were a big BM supporter for YEARS. But recently their gear just was too buggy, the driver updates would fix one thing and break another, the documentation on their gear was poor, and it just felt like they keep inventing new gear to replace old gear instead of trying to support old gear with software updates.

AJA went from a little company with some coverters to the most reliable HD/SD card ever. They keep putting out driver updates that amaze me, the system is ROCK SOLID, and all the different conversions and nonsense the Kona3 can do are a huge timesaver.

We also have a brand new Flame/Smoke in house. It’s taken time to convince clients that our Kona based system with Combustion/Shake/After Effects/Final Cut can run with the big system – but it totally can. In fact it can outrun the Flame on HD renders more often than not. We offer a cheaper rate in the room, and at the end of the day when their HDCAM-SR final output looks spectacular, they see no need to spend $1200/hour in the Flame bay. You just gotta sell them on it by showing them finished product, under budget, and on time.

Oh, and autodesk has hobbled the Kona3 somewhat – it can’t do down/cross/upconversions on the fly. Our Flame guy is bent out of shape that mine can and he can’t. I just smile smugly and help him make Digibetas.

I’m dissapointed that I can’t seem to put any strain on these processors. Only compressor and after effects even begin to use up all this macho! Need more macho!

    Bob –
Why are you so combative? of course I don’t assume anything will work. That’s why I said I’m cloning my Tiger boot drive, then I can fool around with Leopard to my heart’s content.

I just order my Up-To-Date copy. I’ve got an extra HD in the Mac Pro – clone that boot drive and I’ll upgrade right away. Excited to get some, hopefully, more horsepower out of these 8 cores!
